In the meta-theoretical framework, a full scientific theory is a complex hierarchical-network structure which covers three levels: 1) a set of ontological, epistemological-methodological and axiological assumptions (the philosophical basis of a theory); 2) a set of highly abstract theoretical notions and general theorems which compose the image of the world; 3) a set of notions and descriptive theorems which assert something directly about the object being examined (the empirical part). The author considers the first two levels of the full theory of style, i.e., he focuses on its philosophical part and chooses the notion of subject from the second level. He accepts, as the starting point, h…

Organisational climate and employee health outcomes: a systematic review
2019
Organisational climate, particularly safety climate, has been documented as a crucial element in promoting occupational health and safety. However, most previous studies have focused more on safety issues (e.g., injuries and accidents) rather than health outcomes (e.g., illnesses, stress, etc). A comprehensive review is also lacking in relation to understanding the organisational climate–health relationship between different levels of analysis, different data sources and different analytical procedures. We conducted a systematic review to investigate previous scholarly contributions to organisational climate and health. The reviewed articles were obtained from three databases: ISI Web of Kn…
Software Complexity and Organization of Firms’ Offshoring Activities
2017
How does software complexity shape software providers’ offshoring tasks, and how do such firms organize their offshoring activity? These questions are important, since the global software development market is growing rapidly, offering new opportunities for software managers and entrepreneurs to distribute their activities geographically. Based on a multi-site case study of 12 software firms, we study connections between software complexity and the offshoring strategies selected. Our findings suggest that software firms select a variety of organizational structures for their offshoring activity, and that the selection is shaped by the complexity of the software in question. peerReviewed

New Metropolitan Perspectives Transition with Resilience for Evolutionary Development
2023
This open access book conveys attention to the theme of transition towards resilience and sustainability and its evolutionary perspective that emphasizes the complexity and uncertainty that governments and society are called to address in response to the ongoing challenges. "New Metropolitan Perspective Post COVID Dynamics: Green and Digital Transition, between Metropolitan and Return to Villages’ Perspectives”, 25–27 May 2022, Reggio Calabria, Italy. The papers included in the book are grouped around the following main topics: the envisaged transition towards resilience and sustainability; the relevance of the planning dimension for defining sustainable development pathways and managing co…
Experiencing studies at the University of Joensuu - Modelling a student cohort's satisfaction, study achievements and dropping out
2001
The purpose of the study was to examine a student cohort's study experiences and emotions, satisfaction with the learning environment and changes in them during the four years of studies, on the one hand, and the influence of these factors and some background variables on learning outcomes and retention of studies, on the other. In addition, we wanted to find out how students' commitment to their studies and their study orientations influence the overall satisfaction and drop-out rates in different fields of education. The design and the problems were based on the previous research reviewed in the theoretical part and on the practical reasons to develop higher education policies. The answer…
Visual cues improve students’ understanding of divergence and curl: Evidence from eye movements during reading and problem solving
2019
The coordination of multiple external representations is important for learning, but yet a difficult task for students, requiring instructional support. The subject in this study covers a typical relation in physics between abstract mathematical equations (definitions of divergence and curl) and a visual representation (vector field plot). To support the connection across both representations, two instructions with written explanations, equations, and visual representations (differing only in the presence of visual cues) were designed and their impact on students’ performance was tested. We captured students’ eye movements while they processed the written instruction and solved subsequent c…
