Caricature as a creative work for its creator and viewer / Karikatūra kaip kūrybinis darbas jo kūrėjui ir suvokėjui

2012

Nowadays we can witness a tendency where the visual replaces the verbal. Humour experiences the same: its visual expression – caricature – is a visual metaphor that already has taken its remarkable place in the field of humour. Caricatures have become a distorting mirror that show deformed but still fairly presented reality. Humour is important part of our everyday life's communication and it covers many spheres of people's life, even including marketing, politics, work relationships, etc. That is why caricatures became a remarkable tool, for example, in political contentions. This article will show what it takes to create this distorting mirror from one side and to see a reflection in it a…

Identifying objectives for a learning space management system with value-focused thinking

2017

A classroom with a blackboard and some rows of desks is obsolete in special education. Depending on the needs, some students may need more tactile and inspiring surroundings with various pedagogical accessories while others benefit from a simplified environment without unnecessary stimuli. This understanding is applied to a new Finnish special education school building with open and adaptable learning spaces. We have joined the initiative creation process by developing software support for these new spaces in the form of a learning space management system. Participatory design and value-focused thinking were implemented to elicit the actual values of all the stakeholders involved and transf…

Oral leukoplakia; a proposal for simplification and consistency of the clinical classification and terminology

2019

There is a distinct lack of uniformity in the definitions and clinical terminologies related to oral leukoplakia and leukoplakialike lesions and disorders. Proposals have been put forward to subclassify leukoplakia into a homogeneous and a non-homogeneous type based on color only, being either predominantly white or mixed white-and-red, respectively, irrespective of the texture of the lesion. In this proposal there is no need anymore to regard the poorly defined proliferative verrucous leukoplakia as a separate entity. Since keratosis is primarily a histopathological term, its clinical use is discouraged. Alternative terminology for these so-called keratotic lesions and disorders has been p…

Dictating the boundaries of ab/normality: a critical discourse analysis of the diagnostic criteria for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and h…

2017

In this article we report the findings of a critical discourse analysis of the diagnostic criteria for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and hyperkinetic disorder (HD) in two clinical manuals – Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition and International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition. We examine the actions (behaviors) that are said to indicate the presence of ADHD/HD and analyze what the inclusion of these actions reveals about the relationship between ADHD/HD, cultural knowledge, and values. Our analysis reveals that both manuals use subjective, value-laden language to construct a mentally ill individual in opposition to an unseen, supposed…

Transferable and Negotiated Knowledge

2002

• Summary: This article explores the knowledge of community-based social workers in the context of an action research project aimed at exploring the practitioners’ own descriptions of their knowledge and expertise on the theme of spatial marginalization. • Findings: The knowledge of social workers seemed to be based on service users’ experiences and case examples, on value and moral constructions, and it was created from experience, by doing and in action. It was local and contextual, in some sense silent but shared through a discussion process. It was not based on empirically based scientific research understood in the traditional sense; rather, social workers resorted to practical knowle…

The B3 Maturity Model, SCIROCCO Tool and SCIROCCO Knowledge Management Hub: facilitating the capacity-building support for integrated care

2021

Introduction SCIROCCO Exchange is an EU Health Programme project that builds upon the preliminary achievements of the B3 Action Group on Integrated Care of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA) that first developed the concept of an Integrated Care Maturity Model. Through the activities of the SCIROCCO project, the Model has been further refined and is supported by a validated self-assessment tool (SCIROCCO Tool). SCIROCCO is an online participatory tool that helps stakeholders to understand: 1) The context requirements of a particular good practice; 2) The level of maturity required for a care system to adopt and scale-up integrated care; 3) The acti…

Enhancing the SCIROCCO tool using quantitative and qualitative methods

2018

Background: The SCIROCCO tool, developed as part of the SCIROCCO project, incorporates the Maturity Model for the adoption of Integrated Care developed by the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (B3 Action Group on Integrated Care). The online self-assessment tool can be used to facilitate scaling-up of integrated care across different health and care sectors, at different levels in health or care systems, and in a range of communities. Currently, more than 30 European regions are involved in testing the SCIROCCO tool. Since the project launch in April 2016, the tool underwent two iterations. Each of the iterations of the tool was followed by a round of refinement t…

2023

Objective: To analyze the knowledge in palliative care and the attitudes toward caring for the dying of nurses who carry out their professional activity in primary care in Spain. Design: A cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out among Spanish primary care centers. Participants: A total of 244 nurses who had completed their primary care work and agreed to participate in this study were included. Main measurements: The level of knowledge in palliative care was analyzed using the PCQN-SV scale, and attitudes toward care of the dying were measured with the FATCOD-S scale, both of which are instruments that are validated in Spain. Results: Regarding the level of knowledge…

Nutrition Knowledge Is Associated with Energy Availability and Carbohydrate Intake in Young Female Cross-Country Skiers

2021

The aim of this study was to provide information on energy availability (EA), macronutrient intake, nutritional periodization practices, and nutrition knowledge in young female cross-country skiers. A total of 19 skiers filled in weighted food and training logs before and during a training camp. Nutrition knowledge was assessed via a validated questionnaire. EA was optimal in 11% of athletes at home (mean 33.7 ± 9.6 kcal·kgFFM−1·d−1) and in 42% at camp (mean 40.3 ± 17.3 kcal·kgFFM−1·d−1). Most athletes (74%) failed to meet recommendations for carbohydrate intake at home (mean 5.0 ± 1.2 g·kg−1·d−1) and 63% failed to do so at camp (mean 7.1 ± 1.6 g·kg−1·d−1). The lower threshold of the pre-ex…
