Drug resistances in salmonella isolates from animal foods, Italy 1998–2000

2002

We investigated the distribution of serotypes and patterns of drug resistance of 206 strains of salmonella isolated in southern Italy in the years 1998–2000 from raw food of animal origin, faeces of food animals and animal feed. To improve knowledge of mobile genetic elements carrying the resistance genes, some molecular features were also investigated within isolates resistant to three or more antibiotics. A high proportion of isolates, 52.2% and 37.7%, respectively, belonging to both Typhimurium and other serotypes of animal origin, proved to be multidrug resistant. The DT104 complex specific multidrug pattern of resistance was quite infrequent among isolates other than Typhimurium, but r…

Expression of a reporter gene is reduced by a ribozyme in transgenic plants

1994

A chimeric gene encoding a ribozyme under the control of the cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter was introduced into transgenic tobacco plants. In vivo activity of this ribozyme, which was designed to cleave npt mRNA, was previously demonstrated by transient expression assays in plant protoplasts. The ribozyme gene was transferred into transgenic tobacco plants expressing an rbcS-npt chimeric gene as an indicator. Five double transformants out of sixteen exhibited a reduction in the amount of active NPT enzyme. To measure the amount of ribozyme produced, in the absence of its target, the ribozyme and target genes were separated by genetic segregation. The steady-state concentration…

Interkingdom Gut Microbiome and Resistome of the Cockroach Blattella germanica

2021

Cockroaches are intriguing animals with two coexisting symbiotic systems, an endosymbiont in the fat body, involved in nitrogen metabolism, and a gut microbiome whose diversity, complexity, role, and developmental dynamics have not been fully elucidated. In this work, we present a metagenomic approach to study Blattella germanica populations not treated, treated with kanamycin, and recovered after treatment, both naturally and by adding feces to the diet, with the aim of better understanding the structure and function of its gut microbiome along the development as well as the characterization of its resistome.

A longitudinal study of perturbations on gut microbiota of Blattella germanica due to periodic antibiotic treatment

2023

Organochromium complexes - labelled aminoglycoside antibiotics derived from kanamycin A and tobramycin. Synthesis, structural characterization and us…

1993

Abstract The synthesis of metallocenic derivatives of aminoglycoside antibiotics, i. e. kanamycin A and tobramycin, is described. The organometallic-labelled compounds have been obtained from the reaction between the polyaminodrugs and organochromium esters of N-hydroxysuccinimide. The reaction proceeded selectively at the 6′-N position, as might be deduced both from the mass and the pH-dependent 13 C-NMR spectra. The procedure could be regarded as generally useful for the metallolabelling of aminoglycoside antibiotics. As an example of application a competitive immunoassay based on the use of these labels is proposed.
