X(5) critical-point symmetries in 138Gd

2011

International audience; The lifetimes of low-lying transitions in 138Gd have been measured using the recoil-distance Doppler-shift technique. The resultant reduced transition probabilities have been compared to X(5) critical-point calculations to assess the potential 'phase-transitional' behaviour of 138Gd. The X(5) symmetry describes the first order 'phase transition' between sphericity, U(5) and an axially deformed nuclear shape, SU(3). Although a high degree of correspondence is observed between the experimental and theoretical excitation energies, the large uncertainties of the experimental B(E2) values cannot preclude contributions from either vibrational or rotational modes of excitat…

Pushing the Limits: Nuclear Structure of Heavy Elements

2012

Throughout the history of nuclear structure studies, searches for new phenomena have been carried out at the extremes. These extremes can be described in terms of nuclear excitation energy, spin, or in terms of proton or neutron number through the production of exotic nuclei far from stability. One extreme which has always been a centre for activity is that of mass and proton number - the desire to create new chemical elements and understand their nuclear structure. New elements up to proton number Z=118 have been created in the laboratory, but by nature these experiments cannot provide extensive information concerning nuclear structure. The extremely small production cross sections only al…

In-beam spectroscopy with intense ion beams: Evidence for a rotational structure in246Fm

2012

The rotational structure of ${}^{246}$Fm has been investigated using in-beam $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray spectroscopic techniques. The experiment was performed using the JUROGAMII germanium detector array coupled to the gas-filled recoil ion transport unit (RITU) and the gamma recoil electron alpha tagging (GREAT) focal plane detection system. Nuclei of ${}^{246}$Fm were produced using a 186 MeV beam of ${}^{40}$Ar impinging on a ${}^{208}$Pb target. The JUROGAMII array was fully instrumented with Tracking Numerical Treatment 2 Dubna (TNT2D) digital acquisition cards. The use of digital electronics and a rotating target allowed for unprecedented beam intensities of up to 71 particle-nanoamper…

Recoil-decay tagging study of 205Fr

2012

The nucleus 205Fr has been studied through γ -ray and electron spectroscopy using the recoil-decay tagging technique. The resulting level scheme presents a spherical structure built on the 9/2− ground state and a rotational structure on top of a short-lived isomer. The isomer, with a spin and parity of 13/2+ and a half-life of 80(20) ns, de-excites by an M2 transition directly to the 9/2− ground state. Another, longer-lived, isomer, with a half-life of 1.15(4) ms, has also been found and assigned a spin and parity of 1/2+. Transitions populating and de-exciting this isomer have been observed as well. peerReviewed

Narrating Selves amid Library Shelves : Literary Mediation and Demediation in S. by J. J. Abrams and Doug Dorst

2019

This essay focuses on the various forms of narrating, mediating, and interpreting selves within and around a book object, the novel S. (2013) by J. J. Abrams and Doug Dorst. The novel S. is an experiment in producing a deceivingly realistic replica of a maltreated library book object, but its discursive practices also rely on familiar literary forms, harking back to epistolary commonplaces, as well as to marginalia, both ancient and modern. The book object S., which carries the text of the novel-within-a-novel, the readers' multilayered markings, and paraphernalia, forms an archive dramatizing the workings of memory, thought, and emotion. That archive also demonstrates how the characters co…

Fixed points for asymptotic contractions of integral Meir-Keeler type

2012

In this paper we introduce the notion of asymptotic contraction of integral Meir-Keeler type on a metric space and we prove a theorem which ensures existence and uniqueness of fixed points for such contractions. This result generalizes some recent results in the literature.

A fixed point theorem for a Meir-Keeler type contraction through rational expression

2013

In this paper, we establish a new fixed point theorem for a Meir-Keeler type contraction through rational expression. The presented theorem is an extension of the result of Dass and Gupta (1975). Some applications to contractions of integral type are given.

A New Extension of Darbo's Fixed Point Theorem Using Relatively Meir-Keeler Condensing Operators

2018

We consider relatively Meir–Keeler condensing operators to study the existence of best proximity points (pairs) by using the notion of measure of noncompactness, and extend a result of Aghajani et al. [‘Fixed point theorems for Meir–Keeler condensing operators via measure of noncompactness’, Acta Math. Sci. Ser. B35 (2015), 552–566]. As an application of our main result, we investigate the existence of an optimal solution for a system of integrodifferential equations.

Best proximity points for cyclic Meir–Keeler contractions

2008

Abstract We introduce a notion of cyclic Meir–Keeler contractions and prove a theorem which assures the existence and uniqueness of a best proximity point for cyclic Meir–Keeler contractions. This theorem is a generalization of a recent result due to Eldred and Veeramani.
