Seasonal changes in starch content in pistachio organs as related to crop load
2018
The alternate bearing in pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) results from inflorescence buds abscission differentiated on current season growth during the year of heavy crop. Inflorescence bud drop has been directly correlated with the presence of fruits on 1-year shoot, and in particular with the kernel grow that acts as the major sink of nutrients. Experimental evidences suggest the involvement of competition between reproductive organs for the available resources. The annual carbohydrates storage was analysed in mature pistachio trees characterized by low, medium and high crop load (about 1, 7 and 11 kg tree(-1) of dry in-shell nuts). The experiment was carried out in 2013 in a commercial pista…
Ant Colony Optimisation-Based Classification Using Two-Dimensional Polygons
2016
The application of Ant Colony Optimization to the field of classification has mostly been limited to hybrid approaches which attempt at boosting the performance of existing classifiers (such as Decision Trees and Support Vector Machines (SVM)) — often through guided feature reductions or parameter optimizations.
Adjusted bat algorithm for tuning of support vector machine parameters
2016
Support vector machines are powerful and often used technique of supervised learning applied to classification. Quality of the constructed classifier can be improved by appropriate selection of the learning parameters. These parameters are often tuned using grid search with relatively large step. This optimization process can be done computationally more efficiently and more precisely using stochastic search metaheuristics. In this paper we propose adjusted bat algorithm for support vector machines parameter optimization and show that compared to the grid search it leads to a better classifier. We tested our approach on standard set of benchmark data sets from UCI machine learning repositor…
Nonlinear statistical retrieval of surface emissivity from IASI data
2017
Emissivity is one of the most important parameters to improve the determination of the troposphere properties (thermodynamic properties, aerosols and trace gases concentration) and it is essential to estimate the radiative budget. With the second generation of infrared sounders, we can estimate emissivity spectra at high spectral resolution, which gives us a global view and long-term monitoring of continental surfaces. Statistically, this is an ill-posed retrieval problem, with as many output variables as inputs. We here propose nonlinear multi-output statistical regression based on kernel methods to estimate spectral emissivity given the radiances. Kernel methods can cope with high-dimensi…
HyperWall: A Hypervisor for Detection and Prevention of Malicious Communication
2020
Malicious programs vary widely in their functionality, from key-logging to disk encryption. However, most malicious programs communicate with their operators, thus revealing themselves to various security tools. The security tools incorporated within an operating system are vulnerable to attacks due to the large attack surface of the operating system kernel and modules. We present a kernel module that demonstrates how kernel-mode access can be used to bypass any security mechanism that is implemented in kernel-mode. External security tools, like firewalls, lack important information about the origin of the intercepted packets, thus their filtering policy is usually insufficient to prevent c…
Informational and linguistic analysis of large genomic sequence collections via efficient Hadoop cluster algorithms
2018
Abstract Motivation Information theoretic and compositional/linguistic analysis of genomes have a central role in bioinformatics, even more so since the associated methodologies are becoming very valuable also for epigenomic and meta-genomic studies. The kernel of those methods is based on the collection of k-mer statistics, i.e. how many times each k-mer in {A,C,G,T}k occurs in a DNA sequence. Although this problem is computationally very simple and efficiently solvable on a conventional computer, the sheer amount of data available now in applications demands to resort to parallel and distributed computing. Indeed, those type of algorithms have been developed to collect k-mer statistics in…
Monitoring of wheat lactic acid bacteria from the field until the first step of dough fermentation.
2017
The present work was carried out to retrieve the origin of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in sourdough. To this purpose, wheat LAB were monitored from ear harvest until the first step of fermentation for sourdough development. The influence of the geographical area and variety on LAB species/strain composition was also determined. The ears of four Triticum durum varieties (Duilio, Iride, Saragolla and Simeto) were collected from several fields located within the Palermo province (Sicily, Italy) and microbiologically investigated. In order to trace the transfer of LAB during the consecutive steps of manipulation, ears were transformed aseptically and, after threshing, milling and fermentation, s…
Fatty Acid Composition of Gluten-Free Food (Bakery Products) for Celiac People
2018
The aim of this study (first analytical approach) was to obtain data concerning the fatty acid composition of gluten-free foods (bakery products) for celiac people. The study included 35 different products (snacks, biscuits, bakery products, pasta, flours, etc.) from several manufacturers. After extraction and esterification, the fatty acid composition was determined by Gaschromatography (GC&ndash
Spatial analysis of traffic accidents near and between road intersections in a directed linear network.
2019
Although most of the literature on traffic safety analysis has been developed over areal zones, there is a growing interest in using the specific road structure of the region under investigation, which is known as a linear network in the field of spatial statistics. The use of linear networks entails several technical complications, ranging from the accurate location of traffic accidents to the definition of covariates at a spatial micro-level. Therefore, the primary goal of this study was to display a detailed analysis of a dataset of traffic accidents recorded in Valencia (Spain), which were located into a linear network representing more than 30 km of urban road structure corresponding t…
A reduction theorem for the generalised Rhodes' Type II Conjecture
2018
One of the milestones in the theory of semigroups and automata is the Krohn-Rhodes Theorem. It states that every finite semigroup S divides a wreath product of finite simple groups, each of them divisor of S, and finite aperiodic semigroups, i. e. semigroups with trivial maximal subgroups. The smallest number of groups in any Kohn-Rhodes decomposition is called the group complexity of the semigroup. Since there is no obvious way to compute the complexity of a finite semigroup in general, the decidability of this number is one of the most important open problems in finite semigroup theory and the search for the solution has led to the development of many tools and ideas that are useful in fi…
