Spatial beam self-cleaning in multimode fibres
2017
Multimode optical fibres are enjoying a renewed attention, boosted by the urgent need to overcome the current capacity crunch of single-mode fibre systems and by recent advances in multimode complex nonlinear optics [1-13]. In this work, we demonstrate that standard multimode fibres can be used as ultrafast all-optical tool for transverse beam manipulation of high power laser pulses. Our experimental data show that the Kerr effect in a graded-index multimode fibre is the driving mechanism for overcoming speckle distortions, leading to a somewhat counter-intuitive effect resulting in a spatially clean output beam robust against fibre bending. Our observations demonstrate that nonlinear beam …
Surface hysteresis curves of Fe(110) and Fe(100) crystals in ultrahigh vacuum — evidence of adsorbate influences
1992
Abstract We have investigated hysteresis curves of silicon-stabilized Fe(100) and Fe(110) crystals using Polarized Secondary Electron Emission (PSEE) for surface magnetization processes and Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE) for bulk hysteresis curves. In particular, the influence of adsorbates (oxygen and sulphur) and surface roughness on the magnetization reversal has been studied. For surface hysteresis curves we found adsorbate-induced reductions of coercive force of up to 50%; the bulk hysteresis curves showed significantly smaller deviations. Similar changes were caused by surface disorder on an atomic scale induced by ion bombardment. The results agree qualitatively with a previous e…
Leadership Manipulation and Ethics in Storytelling
2012
This article focuses on exerting influence in leadership, namely manipulation in storytelling. Manipulation is usually considered an unethical approach to leadership. We will argue that manipulation is a more complex phenomenon than just an unethical way of acting in leadership. We will demonstrate through an empirical qualitative study that there are various types of manipulation through storytelling. This article makes a contribution to the literature on manipulation through leadership storytelling, offering a more systematic empirical analysis and a more nuanced view of the topic than previously existed by outlining how managers engage in manipulative storytelling and what kind of ethics…
"The past lay claim to the present" memory and narrative as a journey to one's self : a study of Damon Galgut's In a Strange Room
2013
Damon Galgutin In a Strange Room (2010) yhtäältä jatkaa näitä traditioita, mutta toisaalta myös kehittää niitä edelleen. Romaani on oletettavasti Galgutin osittainen omaelämankerta, jonka keskiössä on itsen ra…

The more you move, the more action you construct : a motion capture study on head and upper-torso movements in constructed action in Finnish Sign Lan…
2020
Abstract This paper investigates, with the help of motion capture data processed on corpus principles, the characteristics of head and upper-torso movements in constructed action and regular narration (i.e., signing without constructed action) in FinSL. Specifically, the paper evaluates the validity of two arguments concerning constructed action: that constructed action forms a continuum with regular narration, and that constructed action divides into three subtypes (i.e., overt, reduced, and subtle). The results presented in the paper support the first argument but not directly the second one. Because of the ambiguous position of reduced constructed action in between subtle and overt const…

The relevance of biographic narratives for social workers’ professional memory, reflexivity and identity
2020
The present article is about the use of biographic methods and oral history, and its contribution to developing processes of critical reflection and reflexivity. It is based on a set of oral data collected from Portuguese social workers who played an active role in the revolutionary phase during the transition from dictatorship to democracy in Portugal (following the 25th April 1974 military coup). The article explores how the use of biographic methods (integrated within a historical methodological framework), other than simply producing accounts of past experiences, allowed interviewees to re-capture, re-interpret and re-signify their own experiences in the light of changing professional …
