The relevance of biographic narratives for social workers’ professional memory, reflexivity and identity
2020
The present article is about the use of biographic methods and oral history, and its contribution to developing processes of critical reflection and reflexivity. It is based on a set of oral data collected from Portuguese social workers who played an active role in the revolutionary phase during the transition from dictatorship to democracy in Portugal (following the 25th April 1974 military coup). The article explores how the use of biographic methods (integrated within a historical methodological framework), other than simply producing accounts of past experiences, allowed interviewees to re-capture, re-interpret and re-signify their own experiences in the light of changing professional …

Stability analysis of black holes in massive gravity: a unified treatment
2014
We consider the analytic solutions of massive (bi)gravity which can be written in a simple form using advanced Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates. We analyse the stability of these solutions against radial perturbations. First we recover the previously obtained result on the instability of the bidiagonal bi-Schwarzschild solutions. In the non-bidiagonal case (which contains, in particular, the Schwarzschild solution with Minkowski fiducial metric) we show that generically there are physical spherically symmetric perturbations, but no unstable modes.
Semiclassical zero-temperature corrections to Schwarzschild spacetime and holography
2005
Motivated by the quest for black holes in AdS braneworlds, and in particular by the holographic conjecture relating 5D classical bulk solutions with 4D quantum corrected ones, we numerically solve the semiclassical Einstein equations (backreaction equations) with matter fields in the (zero temperature) Boulware vacuum state. In the absence of an exact analytical expression for in four dimensions we work within the s-wave approximation. Our results show that the quantum corrected solution is very similar to Schwarzschild till very close to the horizon, but then a bouncing surface for the radial function appears which prevents the formation of an event horizon. We also analyze the behavior of…
In-situ annealing characterization of atomic-layer-deposited Al2O3 in N2, H2 and vacuum atmospheres
2019
Tarkista embargo, kun artikkeli julkaistu. Atomic-layer-deposited Al 2 O 3 films can be used for passivation, protective, and functional purposes in electronic devices. However, as-deposited, amorphous alumina is susceptible to chemical attack and corrosion during manufacturing and field-use. On the contrary, crystalline Al 2 O 3 is resistant against aggressive chemical treatments and corrosion. Here, high-temperature treatments in N 2 , H 2 , and vacuum were used to crystallize alumina which exhibited different crystalline phases. The annealing process was monitored continuously in situ by measuring the film temperature and surface reflectance to understand the crystallization kinetics. Ex…
Flat synchronizations in spherically symmetric space-times
2010
It is well known that the Schwarzschild space-time admits a spacelike slicing by flat instants and that the metric is regular at the horizon in the associated adapted coordinates (Painleve-Gullstrand metric form). We consider this type of flat slicings in an arbitrary spherically symmetric space-time. The condition ensuring its existence is analyzed, and then, we prove that, for any spherically symmetric flat slicing, the densities of the Weinberg momenta vanish. Finally, we deduce the Schwarzschild solution in the extended Painleve-Gullstrand-Lemaitre metric form by considering the coordinate decomposition of the vacuum Einstein equations with respect to a flat spacelike slicing.
Injustice in the Ruins and a Disordered Post-Apocalypse: Gothic Ideology in the Digital Game World of Fallout 3
2020
The Gothic is an influential source for storytelling in a wide range of digital games. Thus far, interpreting it in games and how they are informed by Gothic ideology has been little studied. This study seeks to address this gap in research by investigating these issues in the narrative of the action role-playing game, Fallout 3. More specifically, through a close reading of the game narrative and by drawing on theories of the Gothic, ideological aspects of the Gothic are analyzed in detail with specific reference to non-player characters and their actions and dialogue along with elements of the mise-en-scéne, style, and simulation. Results show how classic Gothic ideology is reproduced in …
How to Become an Author: The Poet Isa Asp and Her Childhood Fascination with Writing for Magazines
2021
In this article the author explores the early development of the identity as a writer of a Finnish-speaking poet Lovisa (or Isa) Asp (1853–1872). She wrote her lyrics in the Finnish language in the 1870s, and she is regarded as the first 19th-century female Finnish poet (whose works were published in Finnish). She began writing poetry (initially in Swedish) as a teenager and started her literary career as a contributor to children’s magazines. Asp began her studies at the Teacher Training College in Jyväskylä in autumn 1871 with the aim of working as an elementary school teacher, but she also dreamt of becoming an established writer someday. Unfortunately, her early death meant that most of…
Epäkerrotun mahdollisuuksia Elina Hirvosen romaanissa Että hän muistaisi saman
2012
The possibilities of the disnarrated in Elina Hirvonen’s novel When I Forgot Anna, the character-narrator of When I Forgot (2005), a debut novel by Elina Hirvonen, spends the present-day of the novel sitting in the cafes and remembering the past. She works through some traumatic events and embarrassing situations, and speculates what could have happened. Her unrealized desires, fantasies etc. constitute what Gerald Prince calls the disnarrated. As delineated by Prince, the disnarrated refers to those events that remain unrealized though they are given as possible or actual elements of the narrative. It can fulfill various functions of which the present article examines its possibilities as …
"Hyvät lukijat! Meidän täytyy ottaa haltuun meihin liittyvät sanat." : Vilja-Tuulia Huotarisen Valoa valoa valoa tyttökirjan ja tyttöyden (toisin) to…
2014
Tarkastelen pro gradu -tutkielmassani Vilja-Tuulia Huotarisen Finlandia Junior -palkittua tyttökirjaa valoa valoa valoa (2011). Työni teoreettisena lähtökohtana on Judith Butlerin ajatus subjekt…
