Drawing conclusions about what co-participants know: Knowledge-probing question–answer sequences in new employee orientation lectures

This study aims to uncover the processes of interaction through which knowledge acquisition in new employee orientation is monitored and controlled. Using video-recordings of orientation lectures as data, the study focuses on question–answer sequences in which the lecturer’s question probes into the state of the employees’ knowledge; in particular, it looks at the third turn of the sequence, in which the lecturer comes to a conclusion concerning the participants’ knowledge. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan yhtä live-tviittaamiseen liittyvää vuorovaikutuskäytännettä, televisiolle suunnattuja direktiivisiä tviittejä. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu jalkapallon MM-kisojen Ylen televisiolähetyksistä ja lähetysten aikana #ylemmfutis-aihetunnisteella lähetetyistä tviiteistä. This study describes teacher turn-allocation and repair practices in classroom interaction. The primary aim is to investigate what kinds of embodied actions and other semiotic resources teachers draw on when allocating turns to next speakers and when projecting repair actions in activities structured according to the tripartite instructional sequence of Initiation-Response-Evaluation. The study combines the theoretical and methodological framework of Conversation Analysis and a Goodwinian view of interaction as dynamically and reflexively created through a myriad of semiotic resources.
