Ketogenic Diet Decreases Alcohol Intake in Adult Male Mice
2021
The classic ketogenic diet is a diet high in fat, low in carbohydrates, and well-adjusted proteins. The reduction in glucose levels induces changes in the body’s metabolism, since the main energy source happens to be ketone bodies. Recent studies have suggested that nutritional interventions may modulate drug addiction. The present work aimed to study the potential effects of a classic ketogenic diet in modulating alcohol consumption and its rewarding effects. Two groups of adult male mice were employed in this study, one exposed to a standard diet (SD, n = 15) and the other to a ketogenic diet (KD, n = 16). When a ketotic state was stable for 7 days, animals were exposed to the oral self-a…
Ludwig's angina and ketoacidosis as a first manifestation of diabetes mellitus
2009
Ludwig?s angina is a serious and rapidly progressive infectious process that spreads through the floor of the mouth and neck. In this paper we present an infrequent case of a patient who suffered an odontogenic infection with poor response to the previous treatment, which evolved towards a Ludwig?s angina combined with ketoacidosis in the context of a diabetes mellitus not known before. According to the literature reviewed, this case report represents the first contribution of a Ludwig?s angina and ketoacidosis as an initial manifestation of a diabetes mellitus. The airway management, the antibiotic prescription and the surgical drainage allowed the healing of the patient without medical co…
Ketogenic diet and microbiota: Friends or enemies?
2019
Over the last years, a growing body of evidence suggests that gut microbial communities play a fundamental role in many aspects of human health and diseases. The gut microbiota is a very dynamic entity influenced by environment and nutritional behaviors. Considering the influence of such a microbial community on human health and its multiple mechanisms of action as the production of bioactive compounds, pathogens protection, energy homeostasis, nutrients metabolism and regulation of immunity, establishing the influences of different nutritional approach is of pivotal importance. The very low carbohydrate ketogenic diet is a very popular dietary approach used for different aims: from weight …
Seven-day fasting as a multimodal complex intervention for adults with type 1 diabetes: Feasibility, benefit and safety in a controlled pilot study.
2020
Abstract Objectives Intermittent as well as prolonged fasting are receiving considerable attention and appear favorable in conditions such as metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and rheumatic diseases. Fasting for individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) is generally considered too risky. However, the ability and possibility to change from carbohydrate- to ketone-based fuel supply might be relevant for individuals with T1D. The aim of this patient-led research was to investigate the feasibility, benefit, and safety of a 7-d multimodal fasting intervention in individuals with T1D. Methods This was a non-randomized controlled pilot study, with 20 participants with T1D and 10 without the diseas…
Medium-chain triglycerides may improve memory in non-demented older adults: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials
2022
Abstract Background Ketosis has been exploited for its neuroprotective impact and treatment of neurological conditions via ketone production. Exogenous medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) supplementation may induce nutritional ketosis. The aim of this systematic review is to explore the effects of MCTs on memory function in older adults without cognitive impairment. Methods A systematic literature search of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science was employed from inception until April 2022 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, investigating the impact of MCT oils on com…
Effects of ketosis on cocaine-induced reinstatement in male mice;
2022
In recent years, the benefits of the ketogenic diet (KD) on different psychiatric disorders have been gaining attention, but the substance abuse field is still unexplored. Some studies have reported that palatable food can modulate the rewarding effects of cocaine, but the negative metabolic consequences rule out the recommendation of using it as a complementary treatment. Thus, the main aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the KD on cocaine conditioned place preference (CPP) during acquisition, extinction, and reinstatement. 41 OF1 male mice were employed to assess the effects of the KD on a 10 mg/kg cocaine-induced CPP. Animals were divided into three groups: SD, KD, and KD af…
ERGO: A pilot study of ketogenic diet in recurrent glioblastoma
2014
Limiting dietary carbohydrates inhibits glioma growth in preclinical models. Therefore, the ERGO trial (NCT00575146) examined feasibility of a ketogenic diet in 20 patients with recurrent glioblastoma. Patients were put on a low-carbohydrate, ketogenic diet containing plant oils. Feasibility was the primary endpoint, secondary endpoints included the percentage of patients reaching urinary ketosis, progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival. The effects of a ketogenic diet alone or in combination with bevacizumab was also explored in an orthotopic U87MG glioblastoma model in nude mice. Three patients (15%) discontinued the diet for poor tolerability. No serious adverse events attri…
Nutrition and acne: therapeutic potential of ketogenic diets.
2011
The influence of nutrition on skin health is a growing research area but the findings of various studies on the effect of diet on the development of acne have often been contradictory. The general opinion among researchers has oscillated between two different, opposing positions: that diet either is or is not a key factor for acne development. This review examines the evidence supporting an influence of various dietary components on the development of acne particularly focusing on the role played by carbohydrates. The physiological and biochemical effects of the ketogenic diet are examined from this perspective and mechanisms will be proposed via which this type of diet could have a role in…
Dynamics of ketone body metabolism in diabetic rats.
1972
Steady state blood levels of ketone bodies during infusions of acetoacetate at various rates have been compared in healthy and diabetic rats. The characteristics of the metabolic elimination of ketone bodies from the blood are completely changed in diabetic rats. Whereas steady state levels of ketone bodies increase linearly with the infusion rate in healthy rats, this increase is exponential in diabetic animals. This difference, which is due to an impaired metabolic elimination, becomes evident only above a dosage of 50 μmoles acetoacetate per kg per min. Chronic treatment with insulin for 4–6 days, but not acute insulin injection, restores the capacity of diabetic rats to metabolize keton…
