A Novel Wireless Sensor Network for Electric Power Metering

2015

Wireless sensor network with lightweight and efficient communication infrastructures are today a great interest, both at research and industrial level, as they are the basis for reliable monitoring services. Mesh networks are ideal candidates in this scenario, as they can be very fault-tolerant. After introducing wireless network systems requirements, we show the design of a mesh network routing protocol based on AODV schemas. Its implementation runs on top of low-cost off-the-shelf components, and allowed us to build a custom power meter wireless sensor node.

Decentralized Synchronization for Zigbee wireless sensor networks in Multi-Hop Topology

2010

Abstract The most effective solution for energy saving in low-rate wireless sensor networks is maintaining each node in a doze state as long as possible. In order to guarantee network connectivity, the intervals at which the network sensors are turned on and off have to be coordinated. We analyze the Zigbee MAC performance in sensor networks deployed in multi-hop topologies. For this networks, critical inefficiencies can arise due to transmissions performed by hidden nodes. We evaluate the impact of different synchronization schemes on the network performance, both in terms of network capacity and in terms of energy consumption. We show how the synchronization function can be opportunistica…

A Fast and Interactive Approach to Application Development on Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks

2014

In Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks (WSANs) sensor and actuator devices are connected through radio links to perform tasks in many different contexts. Conven- tionally, applications for WSANs are developed using traditional operating systems which application code is linked with at the end of a cross-compilation process. We propose instead an alternative approach for building applications on WSANs that is based on interactivity and does not require time consuming cross-compilation phases. In our development methodology, it is possible to define procedures and services according to the application target, simultaneously test them and reprogram the nodes interactively when needed, even a…

On-body and off-body transmit power control in IEEE 802.15.6 scheduled access networks

2014

Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) have received much attention due to the possibility to be used in healthcare applications. For these applications, energy saving is a critical issue, as in many cases, batteries cannot be easily replaced. A transmit power control scheme, able to adapt to the variations of the wireless body channel, will allow consistent energy saving and longer battery life. In this paper we propose a transmit power control scheme suitable for IEEE 802.15.6 narrowband scheduled access networks, in which the transmission power is modulated frame by frame according to a run-time estimation of the channel propagation conditions. A simple and effective line search algorithm i…

Gatherer: an environmental monitoring application based on IPv6 using wireless sensor networks

2013

In this paper, we present an environmental monitoring application based on IPv6 using wireless sensor networks. We show the guidelines to connect this network to internet using the 6LowPAN standard with a real prototype in the evolution of the Internet of Things. We assign a unique IPv6 address to the different nodes motes of the network. Gatherer is based on TinyOS using IPv6 and UDP protocols and allows the data gathering of temperature and relative humidity from the different motes, requesting specific data from individual motes when required, increasing the accuracy of the measures. We compare the performance of our IPv6-based proposed application against others and show the benefits of…

Optimized secure and reliable distributed data storage scheme and performance evaluation in unattended WSNs

2013

Unattended Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs), characterized by the absence of real-time communication between sensors and sinks, impose sensors to retain data till the next visit of a mobile sink to off-load their data. In such networks, if a sensor is compromised, data accumulated in the sensor are exposed to attackers. In addition, by holding the secret key of the compromised sensor, attackers can also learn post-compromise data accumulated by the sensor. Furthermore, once sensors stop working due to, for instance, node crash or battery depletion, all the accumulated data will be lost. In this paper, we propose a secure and reliable data distribution scheme that addresses these challenges.…

Concurrent and Distributed Projection through Local Interference for Wireless Sensor Networks

2012

In this paper we use a gossip algorithm to obtain the projection of the observed signal into a subspace of lower dimension. Gossip algorithms allow distributed, fast and efficient computations on a Wireless Sensor Network and they can be properly modified to evaluate the sought projection. By combining computation coding with gossip algorithms we proposed a novel strategy that leads to important saving on convergence time as well as exponentially decreasing energy consumption, as the size of the network increases.

An Efficient, Robust, and Scalable Trust Management Scheme for Unattended Wireless Sensor Networks

2012

Unattended Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs) are characterized by long periods of disconnected operation and fixed or irregular intervals between visits by the sink. The absence of an online trusted third party, i.e., an on-site sink, makes existing trust management schemes used in legacy wireless sensor networks not applicable to UWSNs directly. In this paper, we propose a trust management scheme for UWSNs to provide efficient, robust and scalable trust data storage. For trust data storage, we employ geographic hash table to efficiently identify data storage nodes and to significantly reduce storage cost. We demonstrate, through detailed analyses and extensive simulations, that the proposed…

Printed Antennas for Sensor Applications: A Review

2014

With the expansion in number and requirements of modern wireless communications, the technology related to their associated antennas has been continuously improved. Among other options, printed antennas offer excellent features, such as low weight, profile, and cost, while maintaining good performance characteristics. In addition, their straightforward integration with electronics has opened new fields of application such as smart sensing systems. Printed antennas can be used in different parts of a wireless smart sensor as a radio link, sensing element, or even as energy harvester. In this paper, we present a thorough review of recent advances of printed antennas as regards their use in sm…
