Transforming growth factor beta1 T29C gene polymorphism and hypertension: relationship with cardiovascular and renal damage.

2008

Distribution of T29C TGFb1 gene polymorphism was analysed in 260 hypertensive and 134 normotensive subjects. Circulating TGFb1 and procollagen type III levels, microalbuminuria, left ventricular geometry and function were evaluated in all the hypertensives subgrouped according to T29C TGFb1 gene polymorphism. Circulating TGFb1by ELISA technique, procollagen type III by a specific radioimmunoassay, microalbuminuria by radioimmunoassay, left ventricular geometry and function by echocardiography were determined. All groups were comparable for gender, age and sex. Regarding T29C TGFb1 gene polymorphism, prevalence of TC or CC genotypes was significantly (pv0.05) higher in hypertensives than nor…

The Socio-Psychological confrontation of the Adolescents on the Impact of the Family towards Religious Practices in Tamil Culture, South India, Compa…

Summary: The psychological conflict faced by the Adolescents in confronting Family and religious practices and individual autonomy is a complex issue. This reality exists in all social contexts. One of such ancient context is called Tamil Culture, in the southern part of India. Our research is focused on Adolescents of this ancient Tamil Cultural Context. Thus the aim of this thesis is to understand the psyche of the Adolescents of Tamil culture, in South India, comparing with Tamil immigrants from Sri Lanka living in Palermo, South Italy. We verify 3 hypotheses with the help of 4 tools, gathering data from 225 adolescents from Rural, Urban and Immigrant situation. We base this study on (i)…

La selezione dei giudici della Corte di giustizia. Poteri e limiti del comitato ex. art. 255 TFUE

2013

Abstract The appointment of judges to supranational and international courts has long been an unstudied area of sovereign activity. However, the growing role and significance of the European Court of Justice (ECJ), by now one of the most significant players within the European political and constitutional space, demands reforms which also affect its architecture. The creation of the advisory panel under article 255 TFUE, is a way to improve judicial independence and proficiency but also a mean to achieve an adequate level of judicial accountability. Indeed, the existing national nomination processes, missing both transparency and public involvement, risk to shape courts which are far away t…

Governance of Glocal Tourism

2014

Governance of Glocal Tourism The basic theme of this paper is to reconcile two aspects of tourism, globalization and local identity, which equally fundamental processes in society in the early twenty-first century. Globalization, on the one hand, everything seems to connect and flatten everything, but on the other hand, develops an infinite range of possible paths for different groups or individual tourists. The sense of the local plays and defeats from within globalization. Tourist of globalization poses a direct relationship with the places visited, with the area and its historical memory, its culture and its environment, showing a demand for authenticity, uniqueness and spontaneity of pr…

Economics of Knowledge and Emergent Qualitative Changes

Economics of Knowledge and Emergent Qualitative Changes The traditional economics has its barycentre on the static equilibrium and on the allocation of the scarce resources for alternative uses, on the linear rationality. The economics of knowledge founds instead, upon a reflexive rationality, that has a long run, that acts as dynamic force does not management inside the usual trade-off of resources. The economics of knowledge and the real economy are changing deeply, the subjectivities that are compared through the market and in institutions they become less impersonal and less deterministic. Persons are entrusted less to the automatism of machines or organizational and they discover the r…

Periferia ed edilizia pubblica (1949-1970): alcuni interventi a Palermo

2008

The paper shows the case of Palermo with reference to the theme of the costruction of the urban periphery by means of public interventions that have taken place after the second world war up to the seventies. The study is carried out from the experience of the two septenniums of INA-Casa (1949-1963) that are common to many italian cities and arrives to the self sufficient projects realized in Palermo, such as Zen 2 of Vittorio Gregotti in the northern part of the town. The contribution evidences the distinction between the urban quality of the first interventions closet o the city centre and those that followed – built in the second septennium INA-Casa – which were built there where it was …

Immunohistochemical expression and distribution of orexin, orphanin and leptin in the major salivary glands of some mammals

2012

Abstract: The aim of the study was to assess the involvement of apoptotic factors, cytokeratins and metalloproteinase- 9 in the histogenesis of both Epithelialized Gingival Lesions (EGL) and Periapical Lesions (PAL). 55 consecutive patients, 30 with PAL and 25 with EGL, were selected for the study after clinical and radiological examinations. The PAL patients had severe periapical lesions and tooth decay with exposure of the pulp chamber. All PAL and EGL biopsies were surgically extracted, fixed in 10% buffered formalin, and processed for routine light microscopy. Ten biopsies of each category were processed for immunohistochemistry (IHC). Serial paraffin sections were stained by IHC with a…

Preoperative nasopharyngeal swab testing and postoperative pulmonary complications in patients undergoing elective surgery during the SARS-CoV-2 pand…

2021

Abstract Background Surgical services are preparing to scale up in areas affected by COVID-19. This study aimed to evaluate the association between preoperative SARS-CoV-2 testing and postoperative pulmonary complications in patients undergoing elective cancer surgery. Methods This international cohort study included adult patients undergoing elective surgery for cancer in areas affected by SARS-CoV-2 up to 19 April 2020. Patients suspected of SARS-CoV-2 infection before operation were excluded. The primary outcome measure was postoperative pulmonary complications at 30 days after surgery. Preoperative testing strategies were adjusted for confounding using mixed-effects models. Results Of 8…

Individual and combinatory effects of voluntary wheel running and sActRIIB-Fc administration on redox-balance in mdx mice

2015

Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy (DMD) is X-chromosome linked muscle wasting dis-ease. It is caused by a mutation in the gene coding protein called dystrophin leading to premature death and significantly impairing the quality of life of DMD patients. Oxida-tive stress is a contributing factor in the pathology of DMD. Light intensity exercise and interventions that promote sirtuin (SIRT) 1 activity have been shown to be antioxidant for mdx mice and to ameliorate the symptoms of DMD. Also blocking activin receptor IIB (ActRIIB) ligands has been shown in some, but not all studies to improve the pa-thology of the DMD. The purpose of this study was to find out the individual and com-binatory effect…

The Role of HSP70 in the Diagnosis of HCC

2015

ABSTRACT: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common tumor with a fatal clinical outcome if not diagnosed at an early stage. To date there is still a lack of reliable tumor biomarkers to detect asymptomatic precursor lesions in early HCC. Conventional pathological analysis also often fails to achieve sufficient sensitivity and specificity to diagnose early HCC. Genetic, proteomic, immunohistochemical, and liquid biopsy analysis indicate a role for members of the heat-shock protein 70 (HSP70) family as potential tumor-specific markers for HCC. The aim of this review is to revisit the existing literature and to specifically explore HSP70 as a molecular tumor biomarker for the detection of HCC…
