Description of new Alloxysta (Hymenoptera: Cynipoidea: Figitidae) species from India

2015

Abstract One new species has been discovered: Alloxysta nottoni Ferrer-Suay & Pujade-Villar sp. nov. This new species is here described and illustrated. An update of the Charipinae knowledge in India and a key of the Charipinae present in this country are also given.

Charipinae fauna from New Zealand with descriptions of two new species ofAlloxystaFörster (Hymenoptera: Cynipoidea: Figitidae: Charipinae)

2012

Biologically, New Zealand is an important country for its high levels of endemism. However, the recorded fauna of Charipinae in this country included only three cosmopolitan species: Alloxysta fuscicornis (Hartig), Alloxysta victrix (Westwood) and Phaenoglyphis villosa (Hartig). Here, we describe the first endemic charipines for New Zealand: Alloxysta rubidus n. sp. and Alloxysta thorpei n. sp. This significantly increases the knowledge of cynipoid diversity in Australasia, where this hymenopteran group is very poorly known. The new species are diagnosed, described, illustrated and information about their hosts and distribution is given. Characters useful to distinguish these species are di…

Methods of in vitro toxicology

2002

In vitro methods are common and widely used for screening and ranking chemicals, and have also been taken into account sporadically for risk assessment purposes in the case of food additives. However, the range of food-associated compounds amenable to in vitro toxicology is considered much broader, comprising not only natural ingredients, including those from food preparation, but also compounds formed endogenously after exposure, permissible/authorised chemicals including additives, residues, supplements, chemicals from processing and packaging and contaminants. A major promise of in vitro systems is to obtain mechanism-derived information that is considered pivotal for adequate risk asses…

Long Term Efficiency Analysis of Infiltration Trenches Subjected to Clogging

2018

Abstract: In recent years, limitations linked to traditional urban drainage schemes have been pointed out and new approaches were developed introducing more natural methods for retaining and/or disposing of stormwater. Such practices include infiltration and storage tanks in order to reduce the peak flow and retain part of the polluting components. The impact of such practices on stormwater quantity and quality is not easily assessable because of the complexity of physical and chemical processes involved. In such cases, integrated urban drainage models may play a relevant role providing tools for long term analysis. In this study, the effect of the clogging phenomenon has been assessed by m…

STUDENT TEACHERS’ PROBLEMS IN TEACHING ‘ELECTROLYSIS’ WITH A KEY DEMONSTRATION

2002

This study is concerned with student teachers’ conceptions about teaching the topic of electrolysis and difficulties they encounter. The aim of the study was also to find out how the student teachers understand the meaning of a key demonstration that would show the main features of the phenomenon. During this study eight chemistry student teachers were invited to write a lesson plan on the topic of electrolysis for lower secondary level, grade 8 pupils (age 14 to 15). The written lesson plans and the semi-structured interviews were collected and analysed by using a set of analytical categories. Only two of the eight student teachers had a clear view that electrolysis is a process where an e…

The expanding role of LC-MS in analyzing metabolites and degradation products of food contaminants

2008

Abstract Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) has contributed significantly in advancing research in the analysis of metabolites and degradation products of food contaminants. Of particular interest is the comprehensive application of LC-MS to discovery of degradation products and metabolites. This review, covering research published between 2003 and 2008, describes how LC-MS has been used in this field, with the majority of work dealing with target-metabolite analysis and only a small fraction using LC-MS comprehensively. In considering the significance of this topic and the potential interest in it, we briefly describe state-of-the art mass analyzers applied for it (QtrAP, QqTO…

Two minds that never met: Frank H. knight on john M. keynes once again — A documentary note

2016

This note presents new archival evidence about Frank H. Knight’s views on John M. Keynes. The relevant material is composed of a series of lecture notes taken by Perham C. Nahl in Frank H. Knight’s course on Business Cycles at the University of California at Berkeley in the fall of 1936. It emerges from the notes that the methodological gap between Keynes and Knight was irreducible, which explains the harsh tone of Knight’s published review of The General Theory. Connected to this is Knight’s strenuous defense of the ‘postulates of classical political economy’ as criticized by Keynes in chapter 2 of his book, an argument that was better expounded in the classroom than in the review. However…
