Involvement of nitric oxide-soluble guanylyl cyclase pathway in the control of maximal dentate gyrus activation in the rat.

2006

Summary Nitric oxide=soluble Guanylyl cyclase (NO=sGC) pathway on the maximal dentate gyrus activation (MDA) was studied in rats. The cerebral NO levels were modified by administrating 7-Nitroindazole (7-NI), a selective inhibitor of neuronal NOS, and L-arginine, a precursor of the synthesis of NO. 1H-[1,2,4]Oxadiazole[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ), a specific inhibitor of the NO-sGC pathway, was administered to study the involvement of cGMP pathway. The epileptic activity of the dentate gyrus was obtained through the repetitive stimulation of the angular bundle; MDA parameters studied were: onset time, MDA duration and post-stimulus afterdischarge (AD) duration. 7-NI caused an increase of M…

External hernia of the supravesical fossa: Rare or simply misidentified?

2017

Abstract Background External hernias of the supravesical fossa are considered rare, perhaps wrongly. Highlighting clinical and anatomical features could be useful for correct, preoperative diagnosis, thus avoiding the risk of complications such as incarceration. The study aims to demonstrate that the incidence of external protrusions of the supravesical fossa is higher that supposed. Probably, being mistaken for direct hernias, these hernia types are misidentified and not included in current classifications. This issue deserves attention due to the elevated risk of incarceration related to its distinctive structure. Material and methods 249 consecutive open anterior inguinal hernia procedur…

Efficacy and safety of yttrium 90 ibritumomab tiuxetan in patients with relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma not appropriate for auto…

2007

A prospective, multicenter, nonrandomized phase 2 trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a single dose of yttrium-90 (90Y) ibritumomab tiuxetan in elderly patients in first relapsed or primary refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) ineligible for stem-cell transplantation. Patients had been previously treated with chemotherapy (group A, n = 76) or chemotherapy plus rituximab (group B, n = 28). Patients in group A were further divided into patients in whom induction therapy had failed (stratum AI, n = 33) and patients who had relapsed after achieving complete response (CR; stratum AII, n = 43). The overall response rate (ORR) was 52% and 53% in strata AI and AII…

Determination of Bubble Size Distribution Using Ultrasound Array Imaging

2020

In this article, ultrasonic phased arrays are deployed as an imaging tool for industrial process analysis. Such arrays are typically used for sonar, medical diagnosis, and nondestructive testing; however, they have not yet been applied to industrial process analysis. The precise positioning of array elements and high frequencies possible with this technology mean that highly focused images can be generated, which cannot currently be achieved using ultrasound tomography. This article aims to highlight the potential of this technology for the measurement of bubble size distribution (BSD) and to demonstrate its application to both intrusive and noninvasive process measurements. Ultrasound imag…

Uncertainty Propagation in Integrated Urban Water Quality Modelling

2018

Sensitivity and uncertainty assessment of integrated urban drainage water quality models are crucial steps in the evaluation of the reliability of model results. Indeed, the assessment of the reliability of the results of complex water quality models is crucial in understanding their significance. In the case of integrated urban drainage water quality models, due to the fact that integrated approaches are basically a cascade of sub-models (simulating the sewer system, wastewater treatment plant and receiving water body), uncertainty produced in one sub-model propagates to the following ones in a manner dependent on the model structure, the estimation of parameters and the availability and u…

La location de l'usage : une interprétation écoresponsable du service ? : cas des biens en partage

2013

Offers of sharing services are springing up in cities: Vélib’, Autolib’, carsharing.... Using up involves sharing the service with multiple users and agreeing to separate oneself from all materialism in favor of functionality. This is also an argument towards a more responsible consumption. Hiring or buying, what does the consumer think about it? The value lies in the benefits of use rather than in its possession. It is also a new meaningful experience accepted, tinkered, refused or reinterpreted by the consumers. According to the Grounded Theory principles, a data collection based on life stories, it provides us new information on the attractiveness of this offer of service; and according …

Saproxylic beetle assemblages of three managed oak woodlands in the Eastern Mediterranean

2008

Oak woodlands belong to the natural vegetation in most Mediterranean regions but have suffered from a long history of woodland devastation and overgrazing. The remaining woodlands have been managed in different ways, and we expected this to have effects on the fauna associated with trees. We investigated three different sites in the Eastern Mediterranean with flight-interception traps to analyse the impact of woodland management on dead wood and tree structures and the relevance for saproxylic beetle assemblages. Our results show significant differences in trunk diameter, stein density and dead wood diversity between the three sites. Old oaks in semi-open woodland are characterised by diver…

Drug Resistance in Salmonella enterica ser. Typhimurium Bloodstream Infection, Malawi

2014

To the Editor: Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium is one of the most common causes of bloodstream infection in sub-Saharan Africa (1). Among adults, the principal risk factor for invasive nontyphoidal Salmonella (iNTS) disease is advanced HIV infection; up to 44% of HIV-infected patients experience bacteremic recurrence through recrudescence of the original infection (2,3). Epidemics of iNTS disease in sub-Saharan Africa have been associated with a novel genotype of S. enterica ser. Typhimurium of multilocus sequence type (ST) 313 that is rarely seen outside the region and is associated with multidrug resistance (MDR) to chloramphenicol, cotrimoxazole, and ampicillin (4,5). As a conse…

Surgical Antimicrobial Prophylaxis in Pediatric Patients Undergoing Plastic Surgery: A RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method Consensus Study

2022

For many years, it was clearly shown that surgical procedures might be associated with surgical site infection (SSI). Many scientific institutions prepared guidelines to use in surgery to reduce abuse and misuse of antibiotics. However, in the general guidelines for surgical antibiotic prophylaxis, plastic surgical procedures are not addressed or are only marginally discussed, and children were almost systematically excluded. The main aim of this Consensus document is to provide clinicians with recommendations on antimicrobial prophylaxis for pediatric patients undergoing plastic surgery. The following scenarios were considered: clean plastic surgery in elective procedures with an exclusive…
