Imperfect information and consumer inflation expectations:evidence from microdata
2017
This paper explores which factors trigger an adjustment in consumers’ inflation expectations and looks at the implications regarding forecast errors. We find support for imperfect information models, as inflation volatility and news trigger an adjustment in expectations. Furthermore, we document that individual expectations become more accurate if they have been adjusted.
The Structure and Behavioural Effects of Revealed Social Identity Preferences
2020
A large body of evidence shows that social identity affects behaviour. However, our understanding of the substantial variation of these behavioural effects is still limited. We use a novel laboratory experiment to measure differences in preferences for social identities as a potential source of behavioural heterogeneity. Facing a trade-off between monetary payments and belonging to different groups, individuals are willing to forego significant earnings to avoid belonging to certain groups. We then show that individual differences in these foregone earnings correspond to the differences in discriminatory behaviour towards these groups. Our results illustrate the importance of considering in…
Prevalence of dangerous alcohol consumption in nursing students
2020
BACKGROUND: The use of alcohol is a phenomenon widely spread among young people and takes on different psychological, sociological and cultural connotations. The aim of the study is to stimulate the prevalence of dangerous alcohol consumption and examine the associated factors in a cohort of nursing students from the University of Palermo. METHODS: The study employed a cross-sectional study design. On March 2020, a survey was provided to all nursing students of University of Palermo of the three years of course who attend daily lessons. The questionnaire was structured into two parts. The first section investigates on socio-demographic information. In the second part of the survey, the Alco…
Two View Line-Based Motion and Structure Estimation for Planar Scenes
2012
We present an algorithm for reconstruction of piece-wise planar scenes from only two views and based on minimum line correspondences. We first recover camera rotation by matching vanishing points based on the methods already exist in the literature and then recover the camera translation by searching among a family of hypothesized planes passing through one line. Unlike algorithms based on line segments, the presented algorithm does not require an overlap between two line segments or more that one line correspon- dence across more than two views to recover the translation and achieves the goal by exploiting photometric constraints of the surface around the line. Experimental results on real…
Linear representations of Artin groups
2016
Let Г be a Coxeter graph. Let W be the Coxeter group, A be the Artin group, and A+ be the Artin monoid associated with Г. Let G be a group of symmetries of Г. Then G acts on W, A and A+. The fixed subgroup WG is known to be a Coxeter group, the fixed submonoid A+G is known to be an Artin monoid, and, when Г is of spherical type, the fixed subgroup AG is known to be an Artin group. This thesis studies the behavior of WG, A+G and AG with respect to some faithful linear representations of W, A and A+, respectively.Firstly, we consider the rooted representations of the Coxeter groups introduced by Krammer in his Ph. D. Thesis. These are a generalization of the canonical representations. We take…
Classification of spectra and search for biomarkers in prostate tumours from proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy
2010
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men over 50 years. Current detection methods either lack sensitivity or specificity or are unpleasant for the patient. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy allows the study of metabolism in vivo. The use of a high field machine (≥3T) has allowed us to dispense with the use of an endorectal coil, which is particularly uncomfortable for the patient. The objective of this thesis is to create an automatic method to detect cancer by processing data obtained through magnetic resonance spectroscopy MRS is a complex phenomenon, very sensitive to acquisition conditions. Firstly, we have studied how to improve and optimise signal acquisition. However, even with…
Novel method for functionalising and patterning textile composites:Liquid resin print
2016
Abstract The paper reports a novel method of integrating resin into continuous textile reinforcement. The method presents a print of liquid reactive resin into textile preforms. A series of targeted injections forms a patch which upon consolidation and curing transforms into a stiff region continuously spanning through preform thickness. Enhancing the injected resin with conductive phase allows creating a pattern of patches with controlled dimensions and added functionalities. Patterned composites reveal features which are not typical for conventional composites such as fibre bridged interfaces, regular thickness variation, and gradient matrix properties. The presented study explores the ro…

The photovoltaic growth in the European Union requires stronger RES support
2016
Since the adoption of the EU Directive, 2001/77/EC, the production of electricity from renewable energy sources has progressed. Apart from the indicative target proposed by the Directive, actually no other tools of policy monitoring exist. To fill this gap, we propose a dynamic method able to capture this multidimensional phenomenon, providing an assessment tool to measure the technical efficiency performances of EU countries in the photovoltaic sector (1996–2010). Results show how technical efficiencies of countries are, from one hand, due to problems belonging to the economic and political contexts in which they operate, on the other hand driven by specific political support schemes adopt…
Origins of the outperformance of venture backed initial public offerings : a French study
2010
In this thesis, we analyze the contractual relationship between private equity investors and entrepreneurs/managers of small and medium sized firms. More specifically, we focus on the real contribution of these financial intermediaries to the Initial Public Offering (IPO) performance of financed firms. While considering venture capitalists’ involvement in the governance of financed firms as the main explaining factor, we use the Corporate Governance theory as the relevant theoretical framework. Thus, we firstly point out the agency theory perspective and secondly the resource and knowledge based view perspective to examine the determinants of venture capitalists’ involvement and the impact …
