On the origin of ‘arrested’ charnockitization in the Chilka Lake area, Eastern Ghats Belt, India: a reappraisal

2000

Arrested-type charnockite formation occurs in an assemblage of high-grade gneisses at several localities of the Chilka Lake area that belongs to the Proterozoic Eastern Ghats Belt of India. The isolated ellipsoidal domains are found exclusively in leucogranite (leptynite) bands that intruded lit-par- lit interbanded granulite-grade supracrustal and intermediate igneous rocks (khondalite–enderbite). Macrostructures and microfabrics document a multiple deformation of the rock assemblage under high-grade conditions. The intrusion of the leucogranitic melts separates a first episode of deformation, D1, from a younger progressive deformation, D2–D4. A transpressive regime and inhomogeneous defor…

Palaeoproterozoic ancestry of Pan-African high-grade granitoids in southernmost India: Implications for Gondwana reconstructions

2015

Abstract SHRIMP dating of magmatic zircons from granitoid gneisses and charnockites of the Trivandrum and Nagercoil Blocks in the granulite terrane of southernmost India yielded well-defined protolith emplacement ages between 1765 and ca. 2100 Ma and also document variable recrystallization and/or lead-loss during the late Neoproterozoic Pan-African event at around 540 Ma. Hf-in-zircon and whole rock Nd isotopic data suggest that the granitoid host rocks were derived from mixed crustal sources, and Hf–Nd model ages vary between 2.2 and 2.8 Ga. A gabbroic dyke, emplaced into a charnockite protolith and deformed together with it, only contained metamorphic zircon whose mean age of 542.3 ± 4.0…

Late Palaeoproterozoic depositional age for khondalite protoliths in southern India and tectonic implications

2016

Abstract SHRIMP dating of detrital zircons from garnet–sillimanite–cordierite paragneisses (khondalites) of the Trivandrum Block, southern India, revealed nanometer-scale Pb isotopic inhomogeneity in most grains that we ascribe to annealing processes during ultra-high-temperature metamorphism at ca. 570 Ma. Our age data for zircons from six representative khondalite samples do not document any Neo- or Mesoproterozoic detrital grains, and we conclude from the concordant ages and discordant minimum 207Pb/206Pb ages that the khondalite precursor sediments were deposited more than 2.1 Ga ago and were subsequently intruded by granitoid rocks at ca. 1765–2100 Ma. Some detrital zircons in the khon…

Humite- and scapolite-bearing assemblages in marbles and calcsilicates of Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica: new data for Gondwana reconstructions

1999

This study investigates marbles and calcsilicates in Central Dronning Maud Land (CDML), East Antarctica. The paleogeographic positioning of CDML as part of Gondwana is still unclear; however, rock types, mineral assemblages, textures and P–T  conditions observed in this study are remarkably similar to the Kerala Khondalite Belt in India. The CDML marbles and calcsilicates experienced a Pan-African granulite facies metamorphism at c. 570 Ma and an amphibolite facies retrogression at c. 520 Ma. The highest grade assemblage in marbles is forsterite+spinel+calcite+dolomite, in calcsilicates the assemblages are diopside+spinel, diopside+garnet, scapolite+wollastonite+clinopyroxene±quartz, scapol…

Ultra-high temperature metamorphism recorded in Fe-rich olivine-bearing migmatite from the Khondalite Belt, North China Craton

2018

International audience; We document the first occurrence of Fe‐rich olivine‐bearing migmatitic metapelite in the Khondalite Belt, North China Craton. Petrological analyses revealed two exotic assemblages of orthopyroxene+spinel+olivine and orthopyroxene+spinel+cordierite. Phase relation modelling suggests that these assemblages are diagnostic of ultra‐high temperature (UHT) metamorphism in the Fe‐rich system, with temperatures from 1,000 to 1,050°C at 0.6 GPa. U–Th–Pb SIMS analyses on zircon reveal a similar age of c. 1.92 Ga for the olivine‐bearing migmatite and an adjacent gabbronoritic intrusion that is therefore identified as the heat source for the UHT metamorphism. These results, coup…
