Perovskite thin films grown by direct liquid injection MOCVD

2007

Abstract The continuous scaling down of devices dimensions, in silicon technology, imposes to replace silicon dioxide. Among the potential candidates for new capacitors, some perovskite structure materials (such as titanate or zirconate) show interesting characteristics. The first way to develop perovskite films is to use a mixture of two β-diketonates by varying the solution's cationic ratio. However, our previous results on SrZrO3 showed that a wide parametric study had to be carried on. Another way is to design novel heterometallic precursors that contain both cations on the same molecule. The ligands could be chosen so that peculiar evaporation and decomposition temperatures could be ob…

Unravelling steady-state bulk recombination dynamics in thick efficient vacuum-deposited perovskite solar cells by transient methods

2019

Accurately identifying and understanding the dominant charge carrier recombination mechanism in perovskite solar cells are of crucial importance for further improvements of this already promising photovoltaic technology. Both optical and electrical transient methods have previously been employed to strive for this warranted goal. However, electrical techniques can be strongly influenced by the capacitive response of the device which hides the carrier recombination dynamics that are relevant under steady state conditions. To ascertain the identification of steady state relevant charge carrier dynamics, it is beneficial to evaluate thicker films to minimize the impact of device capacitance. H…

Room temperature vacuum-deposition of CsPbI2Br perovskite films from multiple-sources and mixed halide precursors

2020

Fully inorganic cesium lead halide perovskites, such as CsPbI2Br, show enhanced thermal stability compared to hybrid ones and are being widely investigated as wide bandgap absorbers for tandem applications. Despite their simple stoichiometry, the preparation of highly crystalline and stable cesium lead halide thin films is not trivial. In general, high-efficiency solar cells based on solution-processed CsPbI2Br thin films are prepared by hightemperature annealing or the use of chemical additives. In this work, we use solvent-free synthesis to investigate the formation of CsPbI2Br in bulk or in thin films via mechanochemical synthesis and multiple-source vacuum deposition, respectively. We d…

Highly Efficient Thermally Co-evaporated Perovskite Solar Cells and Mini-modules

2020

The rapid improvement in the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has prompted interest in bringing the technology toward commercialization. Capitalizing on existing industrial processes facilitates the transition from laboratory to production lines. In this work, we prove the scalability of thermally co-evaporated MAPbI3 layers in PSCs and mini-modules. With a combined strategy of active layer engineering, interfacial optimization, surface treatments, and light management, we demonstrate PSCs (0.16 cm2 active area) and mini-modules (21 cm2 active area) achieving record PCEs of 20.28% and 18.13%, respectively. Un-encapsulated PSCs retained ∼90% of their initial…

Efficient, 23%, Solution-Processed Perovskite Tandem Cells

2019

In this issue of Joule, Palmstrom and coworkers present efficient solution-processed two-terminal solar cells employing two metal halide perovskite-based absorbers. The key to this achievement is 2-fold: the deposition of a thin yet robust transparent conductor in between the two sub-cells allows solution processing of the back-cell and enables efficient and local charge recombination. Furthermore, the insertion of large cations reduces halide segregation and enables a higher open-circuit voltage and stability for the high-band-gap sub-cell.

Semitransparent Perovskite Solar Cells for Building Integration and Tandem Photovoltaics: Design Strategies and Challenges

2021

Over the past decade, halide perovskite systems have captured widespread attention among researchers since their exceptional photovoltaic (PV) performance was disclosed. The unique combination of optoelectronic properties and solution processability shown by these materials has enabled perovskite solar cells (PSCs) to reach efficiencies higher than 25% at low fabrication costs. Moreover, PSCs display enormous potential for modern unconventional PV applications, since they can be made lightweight, semitransparent (ST), and/or flexible by means of appropriate design strategies. In particular, by enabling transparency and high efficiency simultaneously, ST-PSCs hold great promise for future ve…

Tuning the Ultrafast Response of Fano Resonances in Halide Perovskite Nanoparticles

2020

International audience; The full control of the fundamental photophysics of nanosystems at frequencies as high as few THz is key for tunable and ultrafast nanophotonic devices and metamaterials. Here we combine geometrical and ultrafast control of the optical properties of halide perovskite nanoparticles, which constitute a prominent platform for nanophotonics. The pulsed photoinjection of free carriers across the semiconducting gap leads to a subpicosecond modification of the far-field electromagnetic properties that is fully controlled by the geometry of the system. When the nanoparticle size is tuned so as to achieve the overlap between the narrowband excitons and the geometry-controlled…

Influence of sol counter-ions on the visible light induced photocatalytic behaviour of TiO2 nanoparticles

2014

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles are attracting increasing interest because of their superior photocatalytic and antibacterial properties. Here, aqueous titanium oxy-hydroxide sols were made, using a green synthesis method, from the controlled hydrolysis/peptisation of titanium isopropoxide. Three different mineral acids were used to peptise the sol (HNO3, HBr and HCl), and provide counter-ions. The influence of nitrate or halide sol counter-ions on size distributions of the starting sols were measured via photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS). Semi-quantitative phase composition analysis (QPA), on the gels thermally treated at 450 and 600 degrees C, was carried out via Rietveld refine…
