The Cross-Channel Effects of In-Store Customer Experience in the Case of Omnichannel Fashion Retailing in Finland
2023
Although omnichannel retailing has emerged as a popular research topic in academic research, there are still gaps in our understanding of this phenomenon. One such gap concerns omnichannel customer experience and particularly the cross-channel or spillover effects of how customer experience in one channel may affect customer behaviour not only in that specific channel but also in the other channels of the same retailer. In this study, we aim to address this gap by examining how customer experience in the offline channel affects customer behaviour in both the offline and the online channel, more specifically how in-store customer experience affects both brick-and-mortar store and online stor…
The importance of online retailers' ethics for traditional, online and multichannel customers
2021
This chapter explores the role of retailers’ ethics in consumer behaviour and channel selection. It is largely acknowledged that many ethical issues in online retailing differ from those of traditional brick-and-mortar retailing. However, there is limited understanding of how ethical considerations vary among consumers that use various shopping channels. Our analysis is based on survey data from traditional shoppers (n = 216), online shoppers (n = 224) and multichannel shoppers (n = 244) in Finland. We firstly examine how these three customer types perceive four key elements of online retailer ethics: security, privacy, non-deception and fulfilment. Secondly, we examine how consumers’ perce…

Ability to Measure and Count in Aleksis Kivi’s Seven Brothers
2021
The illiterate brothers’ elementary ability to measure and count fluently is a striking feature in the Finnish author Aleksis Kivi’s Seven Brothers (Seitsemän veljestä, 1870), a novel that was published before the metric system was introduced in Finland. The seven main characters describe their everyday life and environment and make work- related decisions using numbers, amounts, and measures of distance, area, volume, and weight without hesitation. They are also familiar with some elementary calculations. At the same time, their inability to read arouses desperate anguish in them. I analyze the ways the brothers use numbers and measurements, and the importance of these skills in their life…
“Who’s Afraid of the Dark?”: The Ironic Self-Stereotype of the Ethnic Other in Finnish Rap Music
2017
Drawing on recent sociolinguistic work on globalization and superdiversity, this chapter explores the multisemiotic and ironic construction of the self-stereotype of the ethnic Other in a Finnish rap music video. Because Finland and Finnish hip-hop are still ethnically relatively homogeneous, people of migrant background, such as rap artist Musta Barbaari (Black Barbarian), need to negotiate their belonging in various ways. In the video, he deliberately constructs himself as the ethnicized and sexualized Other to highlight prejudice, discrimination and racism. In doing this, he voices societal critique and dissatisfaction – and speaks for multiculturalism and tolerance in (super)diversifyin…
Exploring Music Video Experiences and Their Influence on Music Perception
2022
Streaming music videos on the internet is an increasingly popular music listening activity that has remained virtually unexplored within music psychology. Studies of the role of music in film, as well as empirical research investigating the influence of audio-visual media and memory, have shown that visual information can have a profound effect on how music is perceived and remembered. The current study aimed to create a framework for understanding music video (MV) experiences by finding out when and why individuals choose to engage with this form of media, how these experiences contribute to the perception of musical meaning and influence affective outcomes, and whether these effects carr…
