Neomuscular fatigue to power loading using a weight-stack device fitted with or without additional rubber band resistance

The addition of a rubber band (RB) to traditional weight-based resistance may be beneficial regarding the deceleration phase common during explosive power actions with light weights. This would lead to greater force and muscle activity during the latter part of the movement, but this may influence the distribution of neuromuscular fatigue. Measurement of EMG activity with textile electrodes embedded into clothing.

Kinetic and electromyographic analysis of single repetition constant and variable resistance leg press actions

During a multi-joint leg press action, maximal force capabilities increase with increasing knee angle. In typical resistance exercises, constant resistance is used, which does not stress the neuromuscular system at large knee angles. The purpose of this study was to compare constant and variable resistance settings using a range of contraction loads and velocities. Medial gastrocnemius muscle behavior during human running and walking.

Utilization of elastic energy in the tendinous tissues (TT) of the human skeletal muscle may be task dependent. The present study was designed to investigate this problem by comparing the fascicle-TT interaction of the medial gastrocnemius muscle (MG) during ground contact of running and walking. Seven subjects ran and walked with a natural cadence. Helicobacter sp. strain Mainz isolated from an AIDS patient with septic arthritis: case report and nonradioactive analysis of 16S rRNA sequence

A campylobacter-like organism was isolated from an effusion of the left knee joint of an AIDS patient 2 weeks after bacteremia with a morphologically identical organism. Amplified genomic 16S rRNA sequences were analyzed by a nonradioactive blotting technique. The closest match was found with Helicobacter fenelliae (97.7% homology). Sequence data and phenotype suggest that the isolate may represent a so far unrecognized species of the genus Helicobacter.

Bilateral and Unilateral Neuromuscular Function and Muscle Cross-Sectional Area in Middle-Aged and Elderly Men and Women

Forty-eight healthy men (M) and women (W), divided into two different age groups, i.e., M50 yrs (range 44-57; n = 12), W50 yrs (range 43-57; n = 12), M70 yrs (range 59-75; n = 12), and W70 yrs (range 62-75; n = 12), volunteered as subjects for examination of muscle cross-sectional area (CSA), maximal voluntary forces, force-time curves, and electromyographic activity of the knee extensor muscles during bilateral and unilateral isometric contractions. Cellular ultrastructure of the ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. A transmission electron microscopic and immunohistochemical study in 55 cases.

To evaluate the cellular ultrastructure following injury, we examined the anterior cruciate ligaments in 55 patients with complete tears in different phases after the injury and compared them to a control group of 39 cadaver knees. Samples were analyzed by electron microscopy, immunofluorescence, and ultramorphometry. After an invasion of inflammatory cells into the stumps of the ruptured ligaments, a marked proliferation of fibroblasts was found at the end of Phase 1 (2-3 days after the ligament injury), that was even more pronounced at the beginning of Phase II (4-17 days). Activation of human quadriceps femoris during isometric, concentric, and eccentric contractions.

Maximal and submaximal activation level of the right knee-extensor muscle group were studied during isometric and slow isokinetic muscular contractions in eight male subjects. The activation level was quantified by means of the twitch interpolation technique. A single electrical impulse was delivered, whatever the contraction mode, on the femoral nerve at a constant 50° knee flexion (0° = full extension). Mechanical behavior of the quadriceps femoris muscle tendon unit during low-load contractions

We examined the relationships between morphology and muscle-tendon dynamics of the quadriceps femoris muscle of 11 men using velocity-encoded phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Thigh muscle electromyography and joint range of motion were first measured outside the MRI scanner during knee extension-flexion tasks that were performed at a rate of 40 times/min with elastic bands providing peak resistance of 5.2 kp (SD 0.4) to the extension.
