Design of a knowledge and management system for starch bioconversion

2011

Abstract In this paper a knowledge acquisition and management system (KAMS) which allows the collection, analysis, ordering and storage of informations generated at starch liquefaction was developed. KAMS was structured on three levels: PostgreSQL as a backend, D2RQ as middle tier and Seaside as frontend. The system was used to store knowledge about the liquefaction process with the goal to be used as a decision support system in chosing the condition for this operation. The tests had shown that the implemented KAMS provides support for: Distributed acquisition of the scientific data generated by the researchers; Structured data storage; Support for the generation and storage of knowledge o…

Feature extraction for classification in knowledge discovery systems

2003

Dimensionality reduction is a very important step in the data mining process. In this paper, we consider feature extraction for classification tasks as a technique to overcome problems occurring because of "the curse of dimensionality". We consider three different eigenvector-based feature extraction approaches for classification. The summary of obtained results concerning the accuracy of classification schemes is presented and the issue of search for the most appropriate feature extraction method for a given data set is considered. A decision support system to aid in the integration of the feature extraction and classification processes is proposed. The goals and requirements set for the d…

The curvilinear effect of manufacturing outsourcing and captive-offshoring on firms' innovation: The role of temporal endurance

2019

Abstract This paper aims to contribute to the open debate in the literature on the effect of global sourcing strategies on firm performance by studying the consequences of manufacturing outsourcing and captive-offshoring for the innovation capability of the firm. We grounded our hypotheses based on the outsourcing and offshoring literature and by narrowing our focus to the effects of persisting in their adoption over time. We tested our hypotheses using data from a sample of 368 manufacturing companies listed on NASDAQ stock market. The paper provides theoretical explanations and empirical findings for the inverted U-shaped influence of keeping doing captive-offshoring on new product develo…

Digital and innovation skills in health care professionals in Europe

2020

Abstract Background Rising life expectancy and ageing population are current phenomena that European society is facing and these are challenges for the European healthcare systems. To face them, several e-health solutions are already designed to optimize resources of the healthcare provider system. However, most of them are not being implemented or deployed. Some of the reasons are the lack of digital skills and innovation readiness in staff, and existing barriers to changing organizational practices. Objectives The DISH project (601008-EPP-1-2018-1-DK-EPPKA2-SSA) will develop 3 concepts to improve the digitalization of healthcare staff to help them in the use of e-health solutions already …

The Relationship between General Intelligence and Media Use among University Students

2020

Students’ information selection process might be influenced by their choice of media sources, their learning contexts and motivation to use certain media as well as their general intelligence, which is crucial for information processing. This study examines the relationship between the general fluid intelligence and the media use of 709 first-year business & economics students from 44 universities in Germany for two different learning purposes: informing oneself about B&E topics and preparing for lectures and exams. Accordingly, the motivator information seeking is divided into curiosity driven and goal driven information seeking. Three types of media sources were included: common news sour…

Identification of Vulnerable Groups in Terms of Language Proficiency in Higher Education

2021

The language proficiency of university students is considered a key factor for knowledge acquisition and success in higher education. Recent research has revealed a connection between language proficiency and academic performance. Some studies identified certain groups of learners who show deficits in language proficiency when entering higher education and who can be considered to be vulnerable groups who need particular support. The present study analyzes the level of proficiency in the language of instruction among two vulnerable groups of students at the beginning of their university studies: (i) students with a refugee background and a mother tongue other than English enrolled in Englis…

Content Code Blurring: A New Approach to Content Extraction

2008

Most HTML documents on the world wide web contain far more than the article or text which forms their main content. Navigation menus, functional and design elements or commercial banners are typical examples of additional contents. Content extraction is the process of identifying the main content and/or removing the additional contents. We introduce content code blurring, a novel content extraction algorithm. As the main text content is typically a long, homogeneously formatted region in a web document, the aim is to identify exactly these regions in an iterative process. Comparing its performance with existing content extraction solutions we show thatfor most documents content code blurrin…

A Framework for Small Group Support in Online Collaborative Learning - Combining Collaboration Scripts and Online Tutoring

2017

Many learners experience difficulties engaging in collaborative learning activities online. Computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) scripts have been implemented to support online learners. Collaboration scripts have shown much potential in facilitating students’ general collaboration skills. However, reported effects of collaboration scripts on domain-specific knowledge acquisition have been less positive. In this paper, I suggest an alternative framework for supporting CSCL learners by combining collaboration scripting and online tutoring. While collaboration scripts can facilitate the acquisition of general collaboration skills, the online tutor is capable of monitoring and asse…

SEMANTIC MANAGEMENT OF INTELLIGENT MULTI-AGENTS SYSTEMS IN A 3D ENVIRONMENT

2011

8 pages; International audience; This paper presents a new approach combining the 3D elements composing the environment of mobile agents with semantic descriptors from Building Information Models. Our proposal is based on the IFC standard, which is used in the field of Civil Engineering to build digital models of buildings during the design phase. The semantic of IFC objects composing the 3D environment is used to select and set up 3D objects and elements of simulation scenarios. The result of this process dynamically generates the input files for the JaSIM environment that performs the simulation. These files deserve the representation of the virtual environment in which the simulation is …

Transformational leadership and absorptive capacity: an analysis of the organisational catalysts for this relationship

2017

ABSTRACTResearch analysing the antecedents of a firm’s absorptive capacity suggests that transformational leadership (TL) is one of its main determinants. However, the few studies focusing on the relationship between these two variables do not explicitly assess why transformational leaders facilitate knowledge acquisition, sharing and retention inside firms. This paper suggests that the reason is that the former contributes to the creation of an organisational context that favours learning processes. We test our research model on a sample of 467 Spanish industrial firms. Findings provide evidence that TL is positively related to the firm’s absorptive capacity and that this relationship is m…
