Implementation Challenges for Supporting Coworking Virtual Enterprises

2013

The creation of co working alliances is usually restricted to the coworkers in the same workspace. However, they might not necessarily be best partners to take advantage of a collaboration opportunity. To break the spatial constrains and find the best partners irrespective of their co working spaces location, our proposal is to represent and manage the co working alliances as virtual enterprises (VEs) and to develop a multi-agent system (MAS) that serves as Virtual Breeding Environment (VBE). In this paper we provide the basis for the future development of this system. Thus, we introduce the co working VEs distinguishing features and the initial proposals on how to implement the MAS to addr…

Activity-Centered Design: An Appropriation Issue

2011

When designing workplace computer systems one must take human activity into account. It has become standard practice to approach this issue through user-centered design. The aim of this paper is to stimulate thought on activity-centered design and to propose the concept of appropriation as a fundamental principle of this design approach. This orientation aims to take into consideration the constituent function of tools during conception. We will take the design of computer systems dedicated to customer relations as an example.

Argumentative Knowledge Construction in Online Learning Environments in and across Different Cultures: A Collaboration Script Perspective

2007

In recent years, information and communication technology has established new opportunities to participate in online learning environments around the globe. These opportunities include the dissemination of specific online learning environments as well as opportunities for learners to connect to online learning environments in distant locations. These dissemination and distance learning scenarios create potential challenges, however, in terms of the cultural differences in the internal scripts that learners of different cultures bring to these environments. This article considers these issues and challenges specifically for online environments focusing on argumentative knowledge constructio…

Argumentative reasoning and taxonomic analysis for the identification of medical errors

2015

Telemedicine consists of the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the practice of medicine. The massive digitalisation of the society is changing the behaviour of ordinary people even in medical sectors. The impact of digitisation is also having impacts on teleexpertise, where a medical professional can remotely ask some advices through the use of ICTs to provide treatment to a patient in critical conditions in remote environment. However, sometimes the outcome of such advice obtained remotely can lead to medical errors. In these situations, it is important to determine whether the causes of the errors could have been avoidable or not for the purposes of establishing …

Creating Attractive Places for Whom? A Discourse-Theoretical Approach to Knowledge and Planning

2013

We aim to find a way to produce knowledge of attractiveness of place that is representative of the variety and complexity of what attractiveness entails and the same time productive for place development and planning. On the basis of a study of an INTERREG IV A-project in Norway, we question how and by whom the discourse regarding what is attractive about places is constructed and how the implicit or explicit knowledge is treated in local planning. We find that planning must produce knowledge in which the different narratives about place confront each other, and highlight differences and mutual debate between adversaries. We conclude by arguing the case for applying a model of agonistic plu…

Present State of Research Regarding University Choice and Attractiveness of the Study Area

2013

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to present the present state, trends and focus of research regarding the factors that influence the decision making process in choosing a university in which a potential student will study. The study has been accomplished using the methodology of bibliographic study and qualitative research, using various secondary sources. The study focuses on the analysis of the present state of research concentrated on Germany's area and constitutes the basis of a comparative management research Romania-Germany. From various German studies it is shown that for most of the students the most important factor in choosing their university is represented by the study spec…

Accessibility of eGovernment Web Sites: Towards a Collaborative Retrofitting Approach

2010

Published version of a chapter from the book: Computers Helping People with Special Needs. The original publication is available at www.springerlink.com: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-14097-6_75 Accessibility benchmarking is efficient to raise awareness and initiate competition. However, traditional benchmarking is of little avail when it comes to removing barriers from eGovernment web sites in practice. Regulations and legal enforcement may be helpful in a long-term perspective. For more rapid progress both vendors and web site maintainers are willing to take short-term action towards improvements, provided that clear advise is available. The approach of the eGovernment Monitoring pro…

Enhancing performance management and sustainable organizational growth through system-dynamics modelling

2012

Organizational growth and performance management provide two important research topics for both enterprises and public sector organizations. Improving performance levels, or at least keeping them stable over time, is a hot topic not only for business executives and entrepreneurs, but also for managers and policy makers in public and non-profit institutions. How best to design Planning & Control (P&C) systems to support organizational performance management and assessment in a sustainability perspective? This paper illustrates the need for a methodological framework that would link system dynamics to P&C systems so as to support decision-makers in managing organizational performance, as well…

The Balanced Scorecard as a Knowledge Management Tool: A French Experience in a Semi-Public Insurance Company

2008

International audience; In this paper we present the Balanced Scorecard, a Strategic Control tool, which is quite famous all around the world and in the European countries. Its principle objective is to articulate planning decisions with control ones thanks to non-financial indicators. The Strategic Control and the Agency Theories constitute the foundation of this tool. But in Northern Europe, some specific Balanced Scorecard have been designed in the framework of the Knowledge Management Theory. To work, the Balanced Scorecard needs a sophisticated information system support. Using two theoretical backgrounds, the Strategic Control approach and the Knowledge Management Theory, we analyse t…
