The Importance of Empowerment in Entrepreneurship

Empowerment comes at a time when global competition and change require people to take initiative and be innovative. Based on the active, persistent, and change-oriented behaviors associated with psychological empowerment, the chapter states that empowerment can contribute to entrepreneurship. The dimensions of empowerment that suggest a theoretical and empirical link with entrepreneurial behavior are discussed. Several propositions regarding the interplay between empowerment and entrepreneurship are formulated. Variable time amplitude amplification and quantum algorithms for linear algebra problems

Quantum amplitude amplification is a method of increasing a success probability of an algorithm from a small epsilon>0 to Theta(1) with less repetitions than classically. In this paper, we generalize quantum amplitude amplification to the case when parts of the algorithm that is being amplified stop at different times. We then apply the new variable time amplitude amplification to give two new quantum algorithms for linear algebra problems. Our first algorithm is an improvement of Harrow et al. algorithm for solving systems of linear equations. We improve the running time of the algorithm from O(k^2 log N) to O(k log^3 k log N) where k is the condition number of the system of equations. …

FO^2 with one transitive relation is decidable

We show that the satisfiability problem for the two-variable first-order logic, FO^2, over transitive structures when only one relation is required to be transitive, is decidable. The result is optimal, as FO^2 over structures with two transitive relations, or with one transitive and one equivalence relation, are known to be undecidable, so in fact, our result completes the classification of FO^2-logics over transitive structures with respect to decidability. We show that the satisfiability problem is in 2-NExpTime. Decidability of the finite satisfiability problem remains open.

In a cave system in Mebrak (Mustang District, Western Nepal), a team of archaeologists investigating extensive abandoned settlements in the high Himalayas made an extraordinary discovery in 1995. One of the caves had been used as a community burial chamber from ca. 400 BC to 50 AD. Inside, approximately 30 naturally mummified bodies rested in bed-like wooden coffins exhibiting ornamental carving and elaborate painting. Fishers “local ecological knowledge” (LEK) can be used to reconstruct long-term trends of species that are at very low biomass due to overfishing. In this study, we used historical memories of Sicilian fishers to understand their perception of change in abundance of cartilaginous fish in the Strait of Sicily over the last decades. We conducted interviews with 27 retired fishers from Mazara del Vallo harbor (SW Sicily) working in demersal fisheries, using a pre-defined questionnaire with a series of open and fixed questions related to the abundance of sharks and rays.
