Words and images of multilingualism: A case study of two North Korean refugees

Abstract The article analyses the experience of multilingualism in the South Korean context, focusing on the experiences of North Korean refugees. The research participants (N=2) are originally from North Korea, but now live in South Korea, where they face challenges in their adaptation to the new society, its linguistic landscape and its practices and positions with regard to language issues in society and in education. Tutkielmani avaa Suomen Etelä-Korea-suhteiden syntyä ja kehitystä vuosina 1953-1989. Etelä-Korea oli vuonna 2012 Suomen kolmanneksi suurin kauppakumppani Aasiassa tavarakaupalla mitattuna. Suomen Etelä-Korea-suhteiden synty ja kehitys eivät tapahtuneet itsestään, vaan veivät vuosikymmeniä ja monien aktiivisten toimijoiden työtunteja. Suomen diplomaattisuhteet solmittiin Etelä- ja Pohjois-Korean kanssa vuonna 1973. English textbooks are a key resource for English courses in both Finnish and Korean high schools. The present study aims to compare the similarities and differences of Finnish and Korean high school English textbooks and analyze them from the perspective of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) on which English textbooks of both countries are theoretically based. Darba empīriskais pētījums ir veltīts kara reprezentācijai, kas ir attēlota ar romāna trīs galvenajiem varoņiem, kā arī Lī kara attēlojumam kā pastāvīgai daļai no vēstures. Darba teorētiskais pētījums apraksta Amerikāņu kara romāna žanru, sniedz pārskatu par mūsdienu Āzijas amerikāņu literatūras lomu un galvenajām tēmām, koncentrējoties uz dažiem autoriem, un priekšstatu par Korejas karu kā aizmirsto vai nezināmo karu.
