Identifying objectives for a learning space management system with value-focused thinking
2017
A classroom with a blackboard and some rows of desks is obsolete in special education. Depending on the needs, some students may need more tactile and inspiring surroundings with various pedagogical accessories while others benefit from a simplified environment without unnecessary stimuli. This understanding is applied to a new Finnish special education school building with open and adaptable learning spaces. We have joined the initiative creation process by developing software support for these new spaces in the form of a learning space management system. Participatory design and value-focused thinking were implemented to elicit the actual values of all the stakeholders involved and transf…

Humanistisen ammattikorkeakoulun opiskelijoiden kokemuksia henkilökohtaisesta opintojen ohjauksesta
2009
Tutkimuksessa kuvataan Humanistisen ammattikorkeakoulun opiskelijoiden ko-kemuksia henkilökohtaisesta opintojen ohjauksesta. Aineisto koostuu 23:n syksyllä 2003 aloittaneen opiskelijan kirjoitelmista, joissa käsiteltiin opiskeluaikaisia hopsauskokemuksia. Tutkimuksen lähestymistapa on fenomenologinen.

Tutkimuksen ohjaavana teoriana toimii Kirkpatrickin Neljän tason –koulutuksen arviointim…
Dimensions of Professional Growth in Work-Related Teacher Education
2017
This article conceptualises adult learners’ professional growth in a tailored, work-related, teacher-qualification programme in physical education. The study data consisted of the reflectivelearning diaries of 20 adult learners during a 2-year tertiary and work-related teacher-qualification programme. The data were analysed using data-driven open coding analysis, which was conducted using the constant comparative method of the grounded theory approach. This article presents the horizontal dimensions (egocentric learner, researching professional and expert within society) and the vertical dimensions (transforming self-image, expanding professional self-expression and widening agency) of the …
The dimensions of social dynamics in comparative studies on higher education
2013
This article discusses social dynamics of higher education which is one of the most crucial but neglected perspectives in comparative studies of higher education. We pay attention to the importance of time, space and contexts—both geographical and socio-cultural ones—to reveal how they influence on different social dynamics in various systems of higher education. Speechlessness, anxiety, and confusion in a teacher education student group
2017
The aim of the study was to explore the tensions, as experienced by student teachers, in a teacher education program that is based on psychodynamic theory. Previous research shows that students have had orientation problems in innovative university studies because it involves students having to take steps toward their discomfort zone. It was therefore considered important to study the mismatch or match of the training model and student experiences. The data were gathered through student interviews. The data analysis utilized a case study methodology and proceeded from thematic network analysis toward a deeper interpretation of the data. The analysis shows students struggle to understand the…
