Samsung and Volkswagen Crisis Communication in Facebook and Twitter : A Comparative Study

Since September 2015 at least two major crises have emerged where major industrial companies producing consumer products have been involved. In September 2015 diesel cars manufactured by Volkswagen turned out to be equipped with cheating software that caused NO2 and other emission values to be reduced to acceptable levels while tested from the real, unacceptable values in normal use. In August 2016 reports began to appear that the battery of a new smart phone produced by Samsung, Galaxy Note7, could begin to burn, or even explode, while the device was on. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, miten sosiaalista mediaa käytetään ja miten sosiaalisen median kautta hankitun käyttäjien tuottaman sisällön todenmukaisuus varmistetaan ulkomaan kriisiuutisoinnissa suomalaisessa valtamediassa. Tätä tarkasteltiin tutkimalla Helsingin Sanomien ja Yleisradion ulkomaantoimitusten sosiaalisen median käyttöä Ukrainan kriisissä. In this chapter, we present the results of the Finnish pandemic study. Compared to many other countries included in this report, the Finnish higher education system is small: In 2021, there were approximately 310,000 undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students studying in Finnish higher education institutions (Vipunen, 2022). Furthermore, the system is quite homogenous in a sense that it is mainly publicly funded. However, the dual system has different kinds of institutions: universities and universities of applied sciences (UAS), which have different missions, as well as their own legislation. Online authority communication during an epidemic : A Finnish example

Social media is creating new challenges for authority communications during crises, such as a pandemic. This study examined Finnish citizens’ opinions about authorities as crisis managers during the swine flu epidemic of 2009-2010 and examined the success of authority intervention to online discussion forums. Through a content analysis carried out at the discussion forums, the study showed that though authorities are highly trusted in general in Finland, this trust is not extended to the online environment.
