At the beginning of August 1934, while spending his holidays in the Black Forest, Husserl received an invitation from the Prague-based Cercle philosophique pour les recherches sur l’entendement humain to contribute to the International Philosophical Congress that was to be held a month later in the capital of Czechoslovakia with a paper addressing the question of ‘the present task of philosophy’. Husserl responded favourably to this request and submitted a paper on 30 August 1934.
