Effectiveness of a 12-month home-based exercise program on trunk muscle strength and spine function after lumbar spine fusion surgery:a randomized co…
2022
Purpose: The effectiveness of a 12-month home-exercise program on trunk muscle strength after lumbar spine fusion surgery was evaluated. Materials and methods: Three months postoperatively, 98 patients were randomized either to the exercise group (EG), with a progressive 12-month home-based exercise program, or to usual care group (UCG), with one guidance session for light home-exercises. Maximal trunk muscle strength was measured by a strain-gauge dynamometer and trunk extensor endurance was measured by Biering-Sørensen’s test at baseline and after the intervention. Results: The mean change in extension strength during the intervention was 75 N in EG and 58 N in UCG. Flexion strength impro…
Exercise for the intervertebral disc : a 6-month randomised controlled trial in chronic low back pain
2020
Background context Muscle, bone and tendon respond anabolically to mechanical forces. Whether the intervertebral disc (IVD) can benefit from exercise is unclear. Purpose To examine whether exercise can beneficially affect IVD characteristics. Study design/setting This is a single-blinded 6-month randomised controlled trial (ACTRN12615001270505) in an exercise and physiotherapy clinic. Patient sample Forty patients with chronic non-specific low back pain (NSCLBP) are included in this study. Outcome measures The primary outcome was lumbar IVD T2 time (MRI). Secondary outcomes included IVD diffusion coefficient and IVD expansion with short-duration lying. Methods Twenty patients progressively …
Rhythmic exercises as tools for rehabilitation following cerebellar stroke: A case study integrating music therapy and physiotherapy techniques
2022
Introduction: This article explores the use of music and multisensory stimuli in the construction of compensatory neural networks for motoric functioning in a patient recovering from cerebellar strokes (CS). This study aimed to address the real-world clinical concern of patients having a passive role in therapy, by arousing the client’s interest and self-motivation in rehabilitation. Method: The article presents a case study of a CS survivor, using data derived from rehabilitation sessions combining music therapy techniques with physiotherapy techniques to improve the fluency and accuracy of his motor performance. Qualitative and quantitative data are used to identify, describe, and evaluat…

Lonkan tekonivelleikkauksesta kuntoutuminen oppimisena
2016
TIIVISTELMÄ Vähäsantanen, M. 2016. Lonkan tekonivelleikkauksesta kuntoutuminen oppimisena. Terveystieteiden laitos, Jyväskylän yliopisto, fysioterapian pro gradu –tutkielma, 58 s., 3 liitesivua. Suomessa tehdään vuosittain noin 7500 lonkan tekonivelleikkausta ja väestön ikääntyessä leikkausten määrä tulee todennäköisesti lisääntymään. Samaan aikaa hoitoajat ovat lyhentyneet, mikä lisää tarvetta fysioterapiaohjauksen kehittämiseen. Tekonivelleikkauksesta kuntoutuminen voidaan nähdä yksilöllisenä kasvu- ja oppimisprosessina, mutta aihetta on aiemmin tutkittu vähän fysioterapian alueella. Tämän pro gradu -tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on ymmärtää lonkan tekonivelleikkauksesta kuntoutumista oppimis…

Strength training in treatment of chronic neck pain
2022
Background: Chronic non-specific neck pain is common in modern industrialized countries causing suffering, disability and considerable economical losses for individuals and society. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of multimodal rehabilitation in treatment of chronic neck pain. Methods: The study group comprised of 56 patients with chronic neck pain, who participated rehabilitation for three weeks and one-week follow-up period after eight months at an inpatient rehabilitation facility. The aim …
