Heparins are commonly administered to cancer patients for the treatment and prophylaxis of thromboembolic events. Importantly, apart from the anti-thrombotic action of these drugs, several clinical trials have demonstrated an improved survival of cancer patients who were administered low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWHs). This improved survival was independent of the anti-thrombotic efficacy, since vitamin K antagonists did not improve clinical prognosis. Moreover, this protective effect was not the result of an inhibition of the growth of primary tumors, but rather the prevention of the spreading of cancer through metastases. BACKGROUND: Recent findings indicate that exosomes released from cancer cells contain microRNAs (miRNAs) that may be delivered to cells of tumor microenvironment. RESULTS: To elucidate whether miRNAs secreted from chronic myelogenous leukemia cells (CML) are shuttled into endothelial cells thus affecting their phenotype, we first analysed miRNAs content in LAMA84 exosomes. Stromal cell-derived factor-1alpha (SDF-1alpha) is a potent chemoattractant for hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC), suggesting that it could play an important role during their migration within or to the bone marrow (BM). The integrin VLA-4 mediates HPC adhesion to BM stroma by interacting with CS-1/fibronectin and VCAM-1. It is required during hematopoiesis and homing of HPC to the BM. Recently oxacyclododecindione (Oxa), a macrocyclic lactone isolated from the imperfect fungus Exserohilum rostratum, has been described as a potent transcription inhibitor of inducible proinflammatory and profibrotic genes in cell culture models. As kidney disease in systemic lupus erythematosus is characterized by aberrant expression of inflammatory mediators and infiltration of immune cells, we investigated the effect of Oxa in MRL-Fas(lpr) mice, a model of systemic lupus erythematosus. Observations on the effects of cyclophosphamide, phosphoramide mustard and some activated oxazaphosphorines on murine L1210 leukemia.

The L1210 tumor system was used in vitro and in vivo in comparative studies with activated cyclophosphamide analogs, cyclophosphamide and phosphoramide mustard. All the above compounds gave substantial cell kills (5 logs) of L1210 in vivo at doses that were non-toxic, but slight differences were noted. ASTA Z 7557 had a slight advantage in cure rate over cyclophosphamide when these drugs were given i.v. or i.p. to early tumor (i.p.). However, cyclophosphamide had the advantage in cure rate when drug administration was i.v. to advanced tumor. The role of drug sequence in therapeutic selectivity of the combination of 5-fluorouracil and cis-platin.

The therapeutic efficacy of 5-fluorouracil (FUra) and cis-dichlorodiamine-platinum (cis-DDP) in mice bearing transplantable leukemia and solid tumors was evaluated using different sequences of combination of these agents. The optimal sequence was cis-DDP administered 24 h after FUra. The administration of FUra at its maximally tolerated dose (MTD) followed 24 h later by low doses of cis-DDP yielded less toxicity and higher response rate against L1210 and colon 26 than the administration of these two agents in the opposite sequence or concurrently at the MTD. Multi-product firms and product variety

The goal of this paper is to study the role of multi-product firms in the market provision of product variety. The analysis is conducted using the spokes model of non-localized competition proposed by Chen and Riordan (2007). Firstly, we show that multi-product firms are at a competitive disadvantage vis-a-vis single-product firms and can only emerge if economies of scope are sufficiently strong. Secondly, under duopoly product variety may be higher or lower with respect to both the first best and the monopolistically competitive equilibrium. Abstract Gonadal development in vertebrates depends on the early determination of primordial germ cells (PGCs) and their correct migration to the sites where the gonads develop. Several genes have been implicated in PGC specification and migration in vertebrates. Previous studies have suggested an important role for the Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK-STAT) signalling pathway in tumour development. Therefore, we explored genetic variants in JAK-STAT pathway associated genes with lymphoma risk.
