Invited to labour or participate : intra- and inter-generational distinctions and the role of capital in children’s invited participation
2016
This paper applies aspects of Bourdieu’s conceptual toolkit related to capital, and analyses inter- and intra-generational relations of influence. Applying Bourdieu’s concepts to examples of case studies from a children’s parliament in Finland, and with reference to an adult resident forum, moments of continuity and disruption in the relatively stable patterns of distinction between children and adults emerge. Children in school councils (at times) are labourers for agendas set by teachers, but the children at the top of the structure’s hierarchy can benefit from cultural capital and a functional capital that enables them to set agendas and direct the work of others. The political capital o…

Master's thesis in Religion, philosophy and society (REL500) In this thesis I will take a closer look at Julian Savulescu’s opinions that parents have a moral obligation to heal and enhance their children’s genes because, according to him, it will give them the chance of a better life than letting nature decide with its unpredictable outcome. I will look into different theories of well-being and discuss if enhancements will in fact give someone a better life than what’s natural before I will argue in favor of using passive genetic interventions to heal the most severe illnesses instead of enhancing. I will also claim that parents do have a moral obligation to treat these severe illnesses if…
The Ethical Egoist Case for Dietary Veganism, Or The Individual Animal and His Will to Live
2017
Master's thesis religion - University of Agder 2017 In this thesis in applied ethics, «The ethical egoist case for dietary veganism, or the individual animal and his will to live», I argue that taking non-human animals into consideration can be argued for from an approach of ethical egoism. I argue that from the standpoint of egoism, in most cases you would be well advised to adopt a vegan diet, that means, practically speaking, a diet rid of animal products. The thesis is divided into four main chapters. The first presents other approaches to animal ethics and the issue of dietary vegetarianism or veganism. I briefly present the standpoints of Peter Singer, Tom Regan and Mark Rowlands. The…

Det såkalte selvbedraget : En fenomenologisk og analytisk kritikk av forestillingen om å bli bedratt av seg selv
2019
Masteroppgave religion REL500 - Universitetet i Agder 2019 Understanding self-deception, the way this term is still applied, has prompted both philosophers, psychologists and others in finding solutions to the dilemma by suggesting theories as to the construction of and motivation behind the phenomenon. Some of these theories compromise the core issue - that p and ~p cannot be true at the same time. Other theories work around the dilemma by offering rather dubious assumptions like boundaries between parts of the mind.My suggestion is a rather clear-cut definition by which self-deception is congruent with Moor's paradox. The self-deception then disappears because the contradiction is cast as…

Master´s thesis in Religion, Philosophy and Society A central notion to Rousseau’s The Social Contract is “the general will”. This thesis is a hermeneutical inquiry into that notion. The thesis first sets the hermeneutical horizons of quasi-realismas the metaphysical framework and non-cognitivism as a motivation theory. The inquiry then begins by Rousseau’s thought experiment on the state of nature, starting with metaphysics, which is “the coming into being” of the general will. Then it transitions into moral psychology in the horizon of non-cognitivism. This is a transition from the philosophy of principles toempirical philosophy. Finally, the findings are critiqued, defended, and applied …

Teleologiske smuler : Søren Kierkegaards kritikk av det teleologiske argumentet for Guds eksistens
2020
Master's thesis in Religion (REL500) This master thesis explores Søren Kierkegaard’s critique of the teleological argument, as it is presented in Philosophiske Smuler (1844/2014). The main purpose of the thesis revolves around exploring the question of whether this critique can contribute to illuminate and reveal important weaknesses and potential fallacies found in modern versions of teleological arguments. By looking at William Paleys teleological argument and Robin Collins’ fine-tuning argument, both historical and modern versions of the teleological argument are being considered and accounted for. Kierkegaard’s arguments shed light on the difficulty of proving the existence of something.…
