A cognitive architecture for music perception exploiting conceptual spaces

2015

A cognitive architecture for a musical agent is presented. The architecture extends and complete an architecture for computer vision previously developed by the author by taking into account many relationships between vision and music perception. The focus of the agent architecture is an intermediate conceptual area between the subconceptual and linguistic areas. A conceptual space for the perception of tones and intervals is thus presented, based on the dissonance measure of the tones. Problems and future works of the proposed approach are finally discussed.

Teaching types with a cognitively effective worked example format

2015

AbstractTeaching functional programming as a second programming paradigm is often difficult as students can have strong preconceptions about programming. When most of these preconceived ideas fail to be confirmed, functional programming may be seen as an unnecessarily difficult topic. A typical topic that causes such difficulties is the language of types employed by many modern functional languages. In this paper, we focus on addressing this difficulty through the use of step-by-step calculations of type expressions. The outcome of the study is an elaboration of a worked example format and a methodical approach for teaching types to beginner functional programmers.

Vascular Microarchitecture of Murine Colitis-Associated Lymphoid Angiogenesis

2009

In permissive tissues, such as the gut and synovium, chronic inflammation can result in the ectopic development of anatomic structures that resemble lymph nodes. These inflammation-induced structures, termed lymphoid neogenesis or tertiary lymphoid organs, may reflect differential stromal responsiveness to the process of lymphoid neogenesis. To investigate the structural reorganization of the microcirculation involved in colonic lymphoid neogenesis, we studied a murine model of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis. Standard 2-dimensional histology demonstrated both submucosal and intramucosal lymphoid structures in DSS-induced colitis. A spatial frequency analysis of serial histolog…

Collaborative Governance in Portugal – Yes or No? A critical approach based on an empirical survey

2019

Collaborative governance can be defined as a concerted type of decision-making and collective action in which government bodies and private sector stakeholders interact as equal partners with the aim of achieving outcomes of interest for both parties. In practical terms, this is a type of governance where special meetings and negotiations are held – typically in somewhat elitist and secretive settings – with the aim of defining shared responsibilities and benefits associated with joint public-private ventures. Academic authors in favour of the adoption of collaborative governance in Portugal tend to present a rather positive view on the merits of this approach. They argue that it is potenti…

La voz del estudiante en la evaluación del aprendizaje: un camino por recorrer en la universidad

2012

During 2009/2010, the current research was conducted with the aim of analysing student and teaching staff on regarding student participation in assessment. A content analysis of 76 subject outlines was carried out, and then 40 member of the teaching staff and 614 university students were surveyed. The results of the content analysis prove there is a shortage of information about and programming for student participation in assessment. Durante el curso 2009/2010 se llevó a cabo esta investigación con el objetivo de analizar la opinión y perspectiva que profesores y estudiantes universitarios tienen sobre la participación de estos últimos en el proceso de evaluación. Critical issues in the management of the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy: The role of some organizational flaws on the adoption of coll…

2020

In March and April 2020, in Italy, there was a fast and uncontrolled spread of COVID-19. The number of infected people and deaths multiplied quickly; in some regions of the Country the phenomenon got out of control. Intensive Care Units (ICUs) were rapidly saturated by COVID-19 patients, generating pressures on the Regional Health System that forced to the public decisionmakers to suspend all non-emergency services. In this short note we argue that Italy’s inability to contain the outbreak of the epidemic in the first phase was due to the low willingness of public organizations to apply effective collaborative governance models

Distributed pedagogical leadership in support of student transitions

2012

This article examines how, through uncovering collaborative leadership, the whole school staff is able to understand its common endeavours to support heterogeneous students’ fluent learning paths. For this, a notion of distributed pedagogical leadership (DPL) is drawn upon. DPL concerns everyone in the school community, not only leaders and management. It means abandoning role, instrumental or process centricity and moving towards leadership that is characterized as the innermost qualities of a professional learning community. This kind of leadership is best described with 10 ‘keys’ as 10 key attributes. To understand DPL in practice, quantitative data both from a nationwide Finnish survey…

Patsy Healey and Collaborative Planning (2005): Re-thinking Democracy in the ‘Reasoning in Public’ Arena

2022

The interpretation of the notion of citizenship has led some authors to the conclusion of the necessity of overcoming a ‘restricted conception’ of citizenship, in order to gain a more inclusive recognition of a cosmopolitan, rather than a mere universal, recognition of rights. So, three core issues are tightly intertwined in this paper: the controversial issue of citizenship in its multiple facets: the formal that is institutional, the substantial and the denied one; the role of planning and its ethical implications; and the very idea of democracy in its dichotomy: institutional versus substantial. Patsy Healey’s work offers us a wide set of normative perspectives and intellectual stimuli, …
