Real-Time Power Flow Monitoring and Control System for Microgrids Integration in Islanded Scenarios
2019
This article presents an enhanced system for real-time power flow monitoring and control (PFMC) for microgrids integration in medium-voltage (MV) distribution networks. The developed solution includes both system architecture and the monitoring and control algorithms, and it has low implementation and installation costs. It is based on the use of hardware and software solutions previously proposed by the authors, i.e., a distributed measurement, a control and communication architecture, and a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) software, which have been enhanced and integrated for the considered application. The SCADA implements a load flow (LF) algorithm for real-time power fl…
Programmable linear quantum networks with a multimode fibre
2019
Reconfigurable quantum circuits are fundamental building blocks for the implementation of scalable quantum technologies. Their implementation has been pursued in linear optics through the engineering of sophisticated interferometers. While such optical networks have been successful in demonstrating the control of small-scale quantum circuits, scaling up to larger dimensions poses significant challenges. Here, we demonstrate a potentially scalable route towards reconfigurable optical networks based on the use of a multimode fibre and advanced wavefront-shaping techniques. We program networks involving spatial and polarisation modes of the fibre and experimentally validate the accuracy and ro…
Challenges for the Teacher's Role in Promoting Productive Knowledge Construction in Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning Contexts
2010
This chapter discusses challenges related to teachers’ pedagogical activities in facilitating productive discussions among students in Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) contexts. In the light of two different cases from secondary-level and higher education contexts, the authors examine how teachers’ pedagogical choices influenced the quality of students’ activity, namely Web-based discussion. The results of our studies indicated that rich moments of collaboration were rare and distributed unequally among the students. The obvious weakness from the perspective of teachers’ pedagogical activities was that in neither of the studies was the students’ interaction in the discussion…
A well-scalable metaheuristic for the fleet size and mix vehicle routing problem with time windows
2009
This paper presents an efficient and well-scalable metaheuristic for fleet size and mix vehicle routing with time windows. The suggested solution method combines the strengths of well-known threshold accepting and guided local search metaheuristics to guide a set of four local search heuristics. The computational tests were done using the benchmarks of [Liu, F.-H., & Shen, S.-Y. (1999). The fleet size and mix vehicle routing problem with time windows. Journal of the Operational Research Society, 50(7), 721-732] and 600 new benchmark problems suggested in this paper. The results indicate that the suggested method is competitive and scales almost linearly up to instances with 1000 custome…
Numerical experiments with a parallel fast direct elliptic solver on Cray T3E
1997
A parallel fast direct O(N log N) solver is shortly described for linear systems with separable block tridiagonal matrices. A good parallel scalability of the proposed method is demonstrated on a Cray T3E parallel computer using MPI in communication. Also, the sequential performance is compared with the well-known BLKTRI-implementation of the generalized. cyclic reduction method using a single processor of Cray T3E.
Modelling thermionic emission by using a two Level mechanical system
2008
The Boltzmann factor is at the basis of a great amount of thermodynamic and statistical physics, both classical and quantum. It describes the behaviour of natural systems that exchange energy with the environment. However, why does the expression have that specific form? The Feynman Lectures on Physics justifies it heuristically by referencing to the "exponential atmosphere" example. Thermodynamics textbooks usually give a more or less complete explanation that mainly involves a mathematical analysis, where it is hard to see the logic flow. Moreover, the necessary mathematics is not at the level of high school or college students' preparation. Here we present an experiment and a simulation …

Cloud screening and multitemporal unmixing of MERIS FR data
2007
The operational use of MERIS images can be hampered by the presence of clouds. This work presents a cloud screening algorithm that takes advantage of the high spectral and radiometric resolutions of MERIS and the specific location of some of its bands to increase the cloud detection accuracy. Moreover, the proposed algorithm provides a per-pixel probabilistic map of cloud abundance rather than a binary cloud presence flag. In order to test the proposed algorithm we propose a cloud screening validation method based on temporal series. In addition, we evaluate the impact of the cloud screening in a multitemporal unmixing application, where a temporal series of MERIS FR images acquired over Th…
Las cooperativas de crédito como entidades colaboradoras de la Administración tributaria
2000
Nowadays the collaboration of private citizens in tax collection management is essential for effective tax collection. For credit cooperatives, collaborating with the State Agency for Tax Administration in tax collection management means public recognition of their ability as financial operators and their economic standing and financial management capability, as well as the possibility of providing more services for their members.
Evaluation of Occupational Training Programs for women
2006
This paper summarizes the results obtained from the evaluation of Occupational Training Programs through which we checked the quality of service and the efficiency of the introduction of women into the labour market, as well as the need to promote quality Occupational Training specifically for women that will not only facilitate their introduction into the labour market by adapting their personal skills to its needs, but will also encourage personal and social improvement.
