Part-of-speech labeling for Reuters database

2015

Even if the Vector Space Model used for document representation in information retrieval systems integrates a small quantity of knowledge it continues to be used due to its computational cost, speed execution and simplicity. We try to improve this document representation by adding some syntactic information such as the parts of speech. In this paper, we have evaluated three different tagging algorithms in order to select the most suitable tagger for using it to tag the Reuters dataset. In this work, we have evaluated the taggers using only five different parts of speech: noun, verb, adverb, adjective and others. We considered these particular tags being the most representative for describin…

The effect of inventory record inaccuracy in information exchange supply chains

2015

Abstract The goal of this paper is to quantify the impact of Inventory Record Inaccuracy on the dynamics of collaborative supply chains, both in terms of operational performance (i.e. order and inventory stability), and customer service level. To do so, we model an Information Exchange Supply Chain under shrinkage errors in the inventory item recording activity of their nodes, present the mathematical formulation of such supply chain model, and conduct a numerical simulation assuming different levels of errors. Results clearly show that Inventory Record Inaccuracy strongly compromises supply chain stability, particularly when moving upwards in the supply chain. Important managerial insights…

File system scalability with highly decentralized metadata on independent storage devices

2016

This paper discusses using hard drives that integrate a key-value interface and network access in the actual drive hardware (Kinetic storage platform) to supply file system functionality in a large scale environment. Taking advantage of higher-level functionality to handle metadata on the drives themselves, a serverless system architecture is proposed. Skipping path component traversal during the lookup operation is the key technique discussed in this paper to avoid performance degradation with highly decentralized metadata. Scalability implications are reviewed based on a fuse file system implementation. Peer Reviewed

GekkoFS — A Temporary Burst Buffer File System for HPC Applications

2020

Many scientific fields increasingly use high-performance computing (HPC) to process and analyze massive amounts of experimental data while storage systems in today’s HPC environments have to cope with new access patterns. These patterns include many metadata operations, small I/O requests, or randomized file I/O, while general-purpose parallel file systems have been optimized for sequential shared access to large files. Burst buffer file systems create a separate file system that applications can use to store temporary data. They aggregate node-local storage available within the compute nodes or use dedicated SSD clusters and offer a peak bandwidth higher than that of the backend parallel f…

Pseudo-haptic Controls for Mid-air Finger-based Menu Interaction

2019

Virtual Reality (VR) is more accessible than ever these days. While topics like performance, motion sickness and presence are well investigated, basic topics as VR User Interfaces (UIs) for menu control are lagging far behind. A major issue is the absence of haptic feedback and naturalness, especially when considering mid-air finger-based interaction in VR, when "grabbable" controllers are not available. In this work, we present and compare the following two visual approaches to mid-air finger-based menu control in VR environments: a planar UI similar to common 2D desktop UIs, and a pseudo-haptic UI based on physical metaphors. The results show that the pseudo-haptic UI performs better in t…

Crowdboard: Augmenting in-person idea generation with real-time crowds

2017

Online crowds can help infuse creativity into the design process, but traditional strategies for leveraging them, such as large-scale ideation platforms, require time and organizational effort in order to obtain results. We propose a new method for crowd-based ideation that simplifies the process by having smaller crowds join in-person ideators during synchronous creative sessions. Our system Crowdboard allows online crowds to provide real-time creative input during early-stage design activities, such as brainstorming or concept mapping. The system enables in-person ideators to develop ideas on a physical or digital whiteboard which is augmented with real-time creative input from online par…

L’informativa antimafia dopo Corte cost. n. 180 del 2022: un’indagine in prospettiva costituzionale degli itinerari di riforma e della giurisprudenza…

2023

The essay addresses the problematic knot underlying the anti-mafia interdiction measures and their “connections” with the discipline of the “anti-mafia code” from a constitutional perspective: the need that those measure do not harm in a disproportionate way Constitutional freedoms and do not endanger deeply the functioning of the economic system. The A. considers the analysis of the itineraries of constitutional jurisprudence of which, in particular Constitutional Court Nos. 57 of 2020 and 180 of 2022 constitute the latest landfalls. Both from the constitutional jurisprudence examined and the fundamental elements of the amendments to the regulation of disclosure adopted at the end of 2021,…

Analysis of dust exposure during chainsaw forest operations

2017

Abstract: In 1999, the European Union proclaimed hardwood dust carcinogenic based on the classification of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) issued in 1995. The operational exposure limit (OEL) for inhalable wood dust has been set to 5 mg m-3 by EU directives, though in different countries the OEL ranges from 1 to 5 mg m-3. The objective of this study was to determine the exposure to wood dust of forest workers in chainsaw cutting and processing and suggest possible countermeasures. The study took into consideration different silvicultural treatments (coppice clear cut, conifer thinning, conifer pruning, and sanitary cut) and chainsaw fuel (normal two-stroke gasoline mi…

Ion mobility spectrometry evaluation of cocaine occupational exposure in forensic laboratories

2014

An approach, based on ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) has been developed for the control of cocaine in air of the breathing zone of operators, in laboratory surfaces and in nasal mucus of employees to evaluate cocaine exposure in a forensic laboratory. The analytical methodology has been validated in terms of accuracy, precision and limits of detection and results obtained were statistically comparable with those obtained by liquid chromatography. Cocaine concentration in laboratory air increases from 100 ± 35 ng m(-3) of a normal day to 10,000 ng m(-3) during the manipulation of cocaine seizures. The occupational exposure limit (OEL) for cocaine has not been established which difficult the…
