A Snapshot on the On-Label and Off-Label Use of the Interleukin-1 Inhibitors in Italy among Rheumatologists and Pediatric Rheumatologists: A Nationwi…

2016

Background: Interleukin (IL)-1 inhibitors have been suggested as possible therapeutic options in a large number of old and new clinical entities characterized by an IL-1 driven pathogenesis. Objectives: To perform a nationwide snapshot of the on-label and off-label use of anakinra (ANA) and canakinumab (CAN) for different conditions both in children and adults. Methods: We retrospectively collected demographic, clinical, and therapeutic data from both adult and pediatric patients treated with IL-1 inhibitors from January 2008 to July 2016. Results: Five hundred and twenty-six treatment courses given to 475 patients (195 males, 280 females; 111 children and 364 adults) were evaluated. ANA wa…

Disease control and treatment pathways of asthma patients after initiating ICS/LABA

2019

Introduction: GINA guidelines recommend medium dose (MED) and high dose (HD) ICS/LABA as the preferred controller for step 4 asthma patients and clinicians should consider step up/down based on their patients’ asthma control. Limited data is available on how step 4 patients respond to ICS/LABA and how they step up/down in clinical practice. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink to assess control status of asthma patients in one year after initiating a MED or HD ICS/LABA between 2007 and 2015, and examined their treatment pathways within one year after the treatment initiation. Results: 29,229 and 16, 575 patients initiated MED and HD…

Prognostic Parameters For Remission Of and Survival In Acquired Hemophilia A: Results Of The GTH-AH 01/2010 Multicenter Study

2013

Abstract Acquired hemophilia A (AHA) is a rare autoimmune disorder caused by neutralizing autoantibodies against coagulation factor VIII (FVIII:C). Immunosuppressive treatment may result in remission of disease over a period of days to months. Until remission, patients are at high risk of bleeding and complications from immunosuppression. Prognostic parameters to predict remission and the time needed to achieve remission could be helpful to guide treatment intensity, but have not been established so far. GTH-AH01/2010 was a prospective multicenter cohort study using a standardized immunosuppressive treatment protocol. The primary study endpoint was time to achieve partial remission (PR, def…

A Single-Arm, Open-Label Phase 1 Study of Itacitinib (ITA) with Calcineurin Inhibitor (CNI)-Based Interventions for Prophylaxis of Graft-Versus-Host …

2020

Background Despite prophylaxis, GVHD remains a significant cause of morbidity and nonrelapse mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). ITA is a potent, selective Janus kinase (JAK) 1 inhibitor that has been combined safely with steroids in patients (pts) with acute GVHD. We describe results from a proof-of-concept study evaluating ITA + CNI-based regimens for GVHD prophylaxis. Study Design and Methods GRAVITAS-119 (NCT03320642) was a single-arm, open-label study enrolling pts aged ≥18 y undergoing allogeneic HCT using peripheral blood stem cells from 8/8 or 7/8 matched related or unrelated donors for a hematologic malignancy. Eligible pts were candidates for reduc…

Physical activity compensates for increased mortality risk among older people with poor muscle strength

2006

The aim of the study was to determine whether habitual physical activity can compensate for the increased mortality risk among older people with poor muscle strength. Mortality was followed up for 10 years after laboratory examination in 558 community dwelling 75- and 80-year-old men and women. Maximal isometric strength of five muscle groups was measured and tertile cut-off points were used to categorize participants. Participants, who reported moderate physical activity for at least 4 h a week, were categorized as physically active and the others as sedentary. High muscle strength and physical activity both protected from mortality, but their effect was not additive. Within each muscle st…

TU-C-16A-01: Joint AAPM/SEFM/AMPR Educational Workshop On “Education of Radiotherapy Physicists”

2014

This workshop is jointly organized by the AAPM, the Spanish (SEFM) and the Russian (AMPR) Medical Physics Societies, as part of formal educational exchange agreements signed by the AAPM with each one of these two societies. With the rapid technological advances in radiation therapy both for treatment and imaging, it is challenging how physics is taught to medical physicists practicing in radiation therapy. The main Objectives: of this workshop is to bring forth current status, challenges and issues related to education of radiation therapy physicists here in the US, Spain and Russia. Medical physicists from each one of these countries will present educational requirements of international re…

The relevance for Public Health of the mid-term and interim analyses of seasonal influenza vaccination effectiveness

2019

Worldwide, influenza is commonly recognized as a respiratory virus that causes a high number of deaths every year, especially among elderly adults and people with chronic illnesses. In order to reduce morbidity and mortality, many countries have implemented, in the last decades, universal influenza vaccination programs with special attention on groups at increased risk of developing the disease, such as pregnant women, children aged 6–59 months, elderly adults and individuals with specific chronic medical conditions. In real-world conditions, observational (nonrandomized) studies on vaccine effectiveness (VE) could measure, the risk reduction of contracting a disease and are considered the g…
