Universal Restrictions in Reading: What Do French Beginning Readers (Mis)perceive?
2020
International audience; Despite the many reports that consider statistical distribution to be vitally important in visual identification tasks in children, some recent studies suggest that children do not always rely on statistical properties to help them locate syllable boundaries. Indeed, sonority-a universal phonological element-might be a reliable source for syllable segmentation. More specifically, are children sensitive to a universal phonological sonority-based markedness continuum within the syllable boundaries for segmentation (e.g., from marked, illegal intervocalic clusters, "jr," to unmarked, legal intervocalic clusters, "rj"), and how does this sensitivity progress with reading…

Constructing social Europe through European cultural heritage
2021
The political and economic crises of the recent decades as well as the new changes brought on by globalization and digitalization have contributed to exacerbate social inequalities and injustice and revealed different social realities in Europe. The EU increasingly deals with social issues in its cultural and heritage policy. In this article, we explore the construction of this social dimension and advance the concept of 'social Europe' by exploring its cultural aspect based on our analysis of a recent EU heritage action, the European Heritage Label. In this action, the narrations of the European past and the attempts to foster common cultural heritage in Europe function as building blocks …
Second-generation immigrants and factors that create challenges to enter Finnish labour market
2018
The aims of this study are to find out the most key factors that have negatively influenced second-generation immigrants with different foreign origins and ethnicities in their quest for job opportunities in the Finnish labour market. This study was done through qualitative research methods, which consisted of 15 second-generation immigrants, aged 18-35. These immigrants were divided into three main groups, which included European, Asian, and those of African backgrounds. This was to examine the role of ethnic aspects and to analyse the level of discrimination on different bases. The study was done through depth semi-structured face-to-face interviews. The questions which I asked the parti…
Yhteisöllinen argumentointi sosionomikoulutuksessa avoimia ongelmia ratkottaessa
2017
The aim of this study was to develop teaching methods for practising argumentative problem-solving in a degree program of social services. The purpose was to acquire knowledge about multiple (face-to-face, online, and integrated) learning environments for studying argumentative problem-solving. In addition, the typical features of collaborative argumentation in student discussions were identified. Two teaching experiments were arranged in courses on drug and alcohol abuse. Both experiments required students to solve open-ended problems through role-play regarding a fictive girl’s use of alcohol. The idea of blended learning was applied in the first teaching experiment. Students (n = 29) wro…

Understanding cooperative sound design through linkographic analysis
2016
Protocol and linkographic analysis are applied to a task of cooperative vocal sketching, proposed in the scope of educational research activites. The understanding of the cognitive behaviors involved in sound creation is aimed at setting the ground for the development of rigorous, designerly evaluation practices tailored to sound design. We show how relevant qualitative and quantitative information about the creative process can be used to inform the assessment and possibly improvement of vocal sketching methods.
Biodiversity of Sourdough Lactic Acid Bacteria.
2010
Modern technology of baked goods largely uses sourdoughs because of the many advantages offered over baker’s yeast. Sourdough is characterized by a complex microbial ecosystem, mainly represented by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts, whose fermentation confers to the resulting product its characteristic features such as palatability and high sensory quality. Raw materials used in baking are not heat-treated; thus, they bring their wild microorganisms to the production process. Investigation of the composition and evolution of microbial communities of sourdough and raw materials is relevant in order to determine the potential activities of sourdough microorganisms. LAB are the main facto…
