“Hopefully nähdään” : North American Finnish language learners building community through virtual conversation hours

In the Finnish Studies Programs at two North-American universities, Finnish language students have collaborated online and participated in informal virtual conversational coffee hour meetings. These meetings are offered to complement students’ collaboration conducted during regular language classes. This article investigates what students talk about when they meet each other virtually and how they build a shared sense of community during these meetings. nonPeerReviewed

The effect of PLC-inhibitor on echovirus 1 internalization probed with fluorescently labeled echovirus 1

Echovirus 1 (EV1) kuuluu Pikornavirusperheeseen ja tarkemmin luokiteltuna Enterovirusten sukuun. EV1 on pieni ja vaipaton RNA-virus, jonka proteiinikuori koostuu neljästä proteiinista VP1-VP4. Infektion on osoitettu alkavan, kun EV1 tarttuu α2β1-integriiniin solun pinnalla, jonka jälkeen virus otetaan solun sisään kaveoliinivälitteistä endosytoosia sekä makropinosytoosia muistuttavalla mekanismilla. Toisaalta sitä, kuinka virus avautuu sekä vapauttaa RNA:nsa, ei vielä tarkalleen tiedetä. Tässä tutkimuksessa EV1 puhdistettiin ensin sakkaroosigradientilla, jonka jälkeen virus leimattiin fluoresoivalla amiinireaktiivisella värillä. Infection-induced chromatin modifications facilitate translocation of herpes simplex virus capsids to the inner nuclear membrane

Herpes simplex virus capsids are assembled and packaged in the nucleus and move by diffusion through the nucleoplasm to the nuclear envelope for egress. Analyzing their motion provides conclusions not only on capsid transport but also on the properties of the nuclear environment during infection. We utilized live-cell imaging and single-particle tracking to characterize capsid motion relative to the host chromatin. The data indicate that as the chromatin was marginalized toward the nuclear envelope it presented a restrictive barrier to the capsids. However, later in infection this barrier became more permissive and the probability of capsids to enter the chromatin increased. Thus, although …

Pigmejsiskpārnis (Pipistrellus pygmaeus) ir viena no Latvijas sezonāli tālu migrējošajām sikspārņu sugām. Lai šāda veida migrācija būtu veiksmīga, dzīvniekam ir jābūt labi attīstītām orientācijas un navigācijas spējām. Šajā darbā es apkopoju informāciju par iespējamiem sikspārņu orientācijas mehānismiem migrācijas laikā, kā arī pārbaudīju sikspārņu spēju orientēties migrācijas virzienā apstākļos, kuros nav pieejami vizuālie orientieri. Rethinking the Role of Volunteering in the Labor Market Inclusion of Migrants

In this article, we critically investigate the role that volunteering can have in the labor market inclusion of migrants. We consider how volunteering can both enhance and hinder inclusion through a comparison of two different contexts: Finland and the United Kingdom, where both welfare state and migration regimes are differently shaped. We also question whether volunteering to gain work experience can be defined as “volunteering” or whether it corresponds more with a definition of unpaid labor.
