An Advanced Technique for User Identification Using Partial Fingerprint

2013

User identification is a very interesting and complex task. Invasive biometrics is based on traits uniqueness and immutability over time. In forensic field, fingerprints have always been considered an essential element for personal recognition. The traditional issue is focused on full fingerprint images matching. In this paper an advanced technique for personal recognition based on partial fingerprint is proposed. This system is based on fingerprint local analysis and micro-features, endpoints and bifurcations, extraction. The proposed approach starts from minutiae extraction from a partial fingerprint image and ends with the final matching score between fingerprint pairs. The computation o…

Mitochondrial DNA haplotype frequencies in natural and experimental populations of Drosophila subobscura.

1998

Abstract The evolution of Drosophila subobscura mitochondrial DNA has been studied in experimental populations, founded with flies from a natural population from Esporles (Majorca, Balearic Islands, Spain). This population, like other European ones, is characterized by the presence of two very common (>96%) mitochondrial haplotypes (called I and II) and rare and endemic haplotypes that appear at very low frequencies. There is no statistical evidence of positive Darwinian selection acting on the mitochondrial DNA variants according to Tajima's neutrality test. Two experimental populations, with one replicate each, were established with flies having a heterogeneous nuclear genetic back…

Modelling Mobile Encounter Networks

2006

This article presents mobile encounter networks, which emerge when mobile devices come across each other and form a temporary connection between them using a common short-range radio technology. Local information exchanges between mobile devices results in a broadcast diffusion of information to other users of the network with a delay. In addition to presenting the concept of mobile encounter networks, we also provide an abstract method for describing the information diffusion process inside them. peerReviewed

Higher Education Internationalization: The Erasmus-Mundus network added value

2014

International audience; Higher education internationalization can play a major role in developing universities and students' capacities and their opportunities broadly throughout the world. Irrespective of contextual differences within and between countries, nearly all higher education institutions worldwide are engaged in international activities and are seeking to expand them. Engaging with the world is now considered part of the definition of quality in education and research. However, with the current crisis, possible tensions and counter reactions to the development of the internationalization can occur, such as an imminent resistance to a supposed denationalizing effect of internation…

Research of Tool-Coupling Based Electro-hydraulic System Development Method

2015

This paper introduces a new kind of tool-coupling based electro-hydraulic system development method including designing character-oriented electro-hydraulic system development and design procedure, co-simulation based system coupling strategy, client-server model management method. An integrated development platform is designed for co-simulation among AMESim, Matlab\Simulink, Flowmaster, Saber and Simplorer. The platform can manage each simulator’s models and co-simulation procedure. The result illustrates tool coupling based electro-hydraulic system development method can improve the efficiency of multi-team collaborative design for electro-hydraulic system and also can analyze and evaluat…

A heuristic for problem formalization in agent based simulation studies

2015

Agent Based Modeling and Simulation (ABMS) is considered an effective approach for conducting simulation studies in many fields. In order to develop high quality simulation models, methodological approaches are demanded. In such direction we are moving by proposing a heuristic for the formalization of agent based simulation problems. The proposed heuristic is based on some guidelines developed for identifying the main elements of the problem domain description by analysing verbs and their common taxonomy in grammar.

MODELLING THE DISPERSION PROPERTIES OF MASS LINEAR CHAINS: EXPERIMENTS AND SIMULATIONS

2009

We analyze and discuss the results of an experiment with the goal of revealing the phonon-like acoustic dispersion curve. The experimental apparatus consists of a sonometer and an electromagnetic driver connected to a signal generator in order to establish standing waves along a stretched metal string (a guitar string) upon which a set of beads (used normally for fishing) has been fixed. The oscillation amplitude is measured by means of a detector connected to an MBL interface. We detect the resonance frequencies as function of the wave-number and obtain the corresponding dispersion curve. The results show that deviations from linearity occur when the wavelength is comparable with the dista…

Data analysis method for evaluating dialogic learning

2001

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new method of analysing and evaluating dialogic learning. Dialogic learning offers possibilities that have not previously been found in nursing or nursing education, although some nursing researchers have lately become interested in dialogic nursing interaction between nurses and patients. The stages of analysis of dialogic learning have been illustrated by using an example. The data for this illustration were collected by video-taping a planning process where students for a Master’s degree (qualifying them to be nursing instructors in Finland) plan, implement and evaluate a course for nursing students, on the care of terminally ill patie…

Mutations in the Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1Ca toxin demonstrate the role of domains II and III in specificity towards Spodoptera exigua larvae

2004

Several mutants of the Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1Ca toxin affected with regard to specific activity towards Spodoptera exigua were studied. Alanine was used to replace single residues in loops 2 and 3 of domain II (mutant pPB19) and to replace residues 541– 544 in domain III (mutant pPB20). Additionally, a Cry1Ca mutant combining all mutations was constructed (mutant pPB21). Toxicity assays showed a marked decrease in toxicity against S. exigua for all mutants, while they retained their activity against Manduca sexta, confirming the importance of these residues in determining insect specificity. Parameters for binding to the specific receptors in BBMV (brush border membrane vesicles) of S.…

Telemedicine and mobile health with integrative medicine in developing countries

2014

International audience; African Home-based Care (AHC) and African Traditional Medicine (ATM) provide a number of self-sustainable primary health care workers in a rural region with the appreciation of ancestral knowledge and its contextual management. Even though most urban residents are able to afford and use conventional medicine to large extent, the implementations of modern medicine in rural areas and in poor peri-urban areas are limited. Our proposal is on how telemedicine solutions could enhance AHC and ATM practices and facilitate simultaneous delivery of both modern and traditional healthcare with evident added value to the recipients. This is indeed a fresh angle, as information an…
