Towards Mkda: A Data Mining Semantic Web Service
2008
Nowadays a huge amount of raw medical data is generated. These data, analyzed with data mining techniques, could be used to produce new knowledge. Unluckily such tasks need skilled data analysts, and not so many researchers in medical field are also data mining experts. In this paper we present a web based system for knowledge discovery assistance in Medicine able to advice a medical researcher in this kind of tasks. The experiment specifications are expressed in a formal language we have defined. The system GUI helps the user in the their composition. The system plans a Knowledge Discovery Process (KDP). The KDP is designed on the basis of rules in a knowledge base. Finally the system exec…
FAULT DETECTION AND DATA PREDICTION FOR WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS
2014
In the last few years, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been extensively used as a pervasive sensing module of Ambient Intelligence (AmI) systems in several application fields, thanks to their versatility and ability to monitor diverse environmental quantities. Although wireless sensor nodes are able to perform onboard computations and to share the sensed data, they are limited by the scarcity of energy resources which heavily influences the network lifetime; moreover, the design phase of a WSN requires testing the application scalability prior to actual deployment. In this regard, this dissertation focuses on data prediction to address such crucial tasks as prolonging the network lifet…
Secure e-voting in smart communities
2020
Nowadays, digital voting systems are growing in importance. This is an especially sensitive area, because elections can directly affect democratic life of many smart communities. The goal of digital voting systems is to exploit ICT technologies to improve the security and usability of traditional electoral systems. In this work we present a secure electronic voting system that guarantees the secrecy, anonymity, integrity, uniqueness and authenticity of votes, while offering a user-friendly experience to voters, putting them at ease through the use of technologies familiar to them. To ensure these fundamental security requirements, the system fully separates the registration and voting phase…
Towards MKDA: A Knowledge Discovery Assistant For Researches in Medicine
2007

Understanding the Environment through Wireless Sensor Networks
2007
This paper presents a new cognitive architecture for extracting meaningful, high-level information from the environment, starting from the raw data collected by a Wireless Sensor Network. The proposed framework is capable of building rich internal representation of the sensed environment by means of intelligent data processing and correlation. Furthermore, our approach aims at integrating the connectionist, data-driven model with the symbolic one, that uses a high-level knowledge about the domain to drive the environment interpretation. To this aim, the framework exploits the notion of conceptual spaces, adopting a conceptual layer between the subsymbolic one, that processes sensory data, a…
Fast adaptive frame preprocessing for 3D reconstruction
2015
Abstract: This paper presents a new online preprocessing strategy to detect and discard ongoing bad frames in video sequences. These include frames where an accurate localization between corresponding points is difficult, such as for blurred frames, or which do not provide relevant information with respect to the previous frames in terms of texture, image contrast and non-flat areas. Unlike keyframe selectors and deblurring methods, the proposed approach is a fast preprocessing working on a simple gradient statistic, that does not require to compute complex time-consuming image processing, such as the computation of image feature keypoints, previous poses and 3D structure, or to know a prio…
Inside the robot’s mind during human-robot interaction
2019
Humans and robots collaborating and cooperating for pursuing a shared objective need to rely on the other for carrying out an effective decision process and for updating knowledge when necessary in a dynamic environment. Robots have to behave as they were human teammates. To model the cognitive process of robots during the interaction, we developed a cognitive architecture that we implemented employing the BDI (belief, desire, intention) agent paradigm. In this paper, we focus on how to let the robot show to the human its reasoning process and how its knowledge on the work environment grows. We realized a framework whose heart is a simulator that serves the human as a window on the robot’s …
A Knowledge Management System using Bayesian Network
2009
In today's world, decision support and knowledge management processes are strategic and interdependent activities in many organizations. The companies' interest on a correct knowledge management is grown, more than interest on the mere knowledge itself. This paper proposes a Knowledge Management System based on Bayesian networks. The system has been tested collecting and using data coming from projects and processes typical of ICT companies, and provides a Document Management System and a Decision Support system to share documents and to plan how to best use firms' knowledge.
The Shift toward a Sustainable Urban Mobility through Decision Support Systems
2017
This chapter examines Decision support systems (DSS) are instrumental in the sustainable development of urban mobility, as they are useful to each decision maker to better predict, evaluate, and measure the impact of alternative solutions and to take informed and evidence-based decisions. It presents a number of DSSs explaining how sustainable mobility targets could be reached through these systems. The chapter highlights the transition toward a more sustainable mobility model not only comprises innovation at vehicle or infrastructure level, but also requires interdisciplinary and cross-sectorial expertise together with effective decision making support. When a DSS for sustainable urban mob…
An Intelligent System for Building Bioinformatics Workflows
2012
In this paper a new intelligent system designed to support the researcher in the development of a workflow for bio informatics experiments is presented. The proposed system is capable to suggest one or more strategies in order to resolve the selected problem and to support the user in the assembly of a workflow for complex experiments, using a a Knowledge base, representing the expertise about the application domain, and a Rule-Based system for decision-making activity. Moreover, the system can represent this workflow at different abstraction layers, freeing the user from implementation details and assisting him in the correct configuration of the algorithms. A sample workflow for protein c…
