Inner speech for a self-conscious robot
2018
The experience self-conscious thinking in the verbose form of inner speech is a common one. Such a covert dialogue accompanies the introspection of mental life and fulfills important roles in our cognition, such as self-regulation, self-restructuring, and re-focusing on attentional resources. Although the functional underpinning and the phenomenology of inner speech are largely investigated in psychological and philosophical fields, robotic research generally does not address such a form of self-conscious behavior. Existing models of inner speech inspire computational tools to provide the robot with a form of self-consciousness. Here, the most widespread psychological models of inner speech…
PDA -- Remote Display Interaction Framework
2008
This paper discusses the design of a PDA-driven remote display control system which was designed for a pervasive computing scenario. Our solution enables a PDA to perform as an interaction device (such as keyboard or mouse) to operate applications which are using remote displays. Our system consists of two components: one devoted to pair users and remote display according to their relative position, and one to provide the PDA with appropriate graphical interfaces and ad-hoc communication protocols. Besides a case study on the use of remote displays during a course with in our department, this paper discusses system highlights, components, and experiments as for standard multimedia and offic…
A Modular Architecture for Adaptive ChatBots
2011
We illustrate an architecture for a conversational agent based on a modular knowledge representation. This solution provides intelligent conversational agents with a dynamic and flexible behavior. The modularity of the architecture allows a concurrent and synergic use of different techniques, making it possible to use the most adequate methodology for the management of a specific characteristic of the domain, of the dialogue, or of the user behavior. We show the implementation of a proof-of-concept prototype: a set of modules exploiting different knowledge representation techniques and capable to differently manage conversation features has been developed. Each module is automatically trigg…
High-level Programming and Symbolic Reasoning on IoT Resource Constrained Devices
2015
While the vision of Internet of Things (IoT) is rather inspiring, its practical implementation remains challenging. Conventional programming approaches prove unsuitable to provide IoT resource constrained devices with the distributed processing capabilities required to implement intelligent, autonomic, and self-organizing behaviors. In our previous work, we had already proposed an alternative programming methodology for such systems that is characterized by high-level programming and symbolic expressions evaluation, and developed a lightweight middleware to support it. Our approach allows for interactive programming of deployed nodes, and it is based on the simple but effective paradigm of …
An Evaluation of HCI and CMC in Information Systems within Highly Crowded Large Events
2013
Pervasive systems are composed of a large variety of networked smart devices that supposedly enrich the environment they are deployed in. The access to services provided by a pervasive system should be as natural and “unconscious” as possible. In a large number of cases, the available interaction modality seems to be more oriented towards showing off technological wonders rather than to the actual usability of the interface. In this paper we evaluate and compare two different versions of an information provision system deployed in two editions of a large fair. In particular, we will focus on the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Computer-Mediated-Communication (CMC) points of view. The a…

A Behavior-Based Intrusion Detection System Using Ensemble Learning Techniques
2022
Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) play a key role in modern ICT security. Attacks detected and reported by IDSs are often analyzed by administrators who are tasked with countering the attack and minimizing its damage. Consequently, it is important that the alerts generated by the IDS are as detailed as possible. In this paper, we present a multi-layered behavior-based IDS using ensemble learning techniques for the classification of network attacks. Three widely adopted and appreciated models, i.e., Decision Trees, Random Forests, and Artificial Neural Networks, have been chosen to build the ensemble. To reduce the system response time, our solution is designed to immediately filter out tra…
Three-dimensional matching based resource provisioning for the design of low-latency heterogeneous IoT networks
2019
Internet-of-Things (IoT) is a networking architecture where promising, intelligent services are designed via leveraging information from multiple heterogeneous sources of data within the network. However, the availability of such information in a timely manner requires processing and communication of raw data collected from these sources. Therefore, the economic feasibility of IoT-enabled networks relies on the efficient allocation of both computational and communication resources within the network. Since fog computing and 5G cellular networks approach this problem independently, there is a need for joint resource-provisioning of both communication and computational resources in the networ…
A Middleware to Develop and Test Vehicular Sensor Network Applications
2019
The Smart city ecosystem is composed of several networked devices that provide services to citizens and improve their quality of life. Basic services, which must be exposed by the underlying software infrastructure, require efficient networking and communication protocols to coordinate and manage all the system components. In particular, Vehicular Sensor Networks (VSNs) are envisioned as key components of smart cities. Verification is crucial in such a highly dynamic scenario to ensure operation correctness and to reduce the development cost of smart applications. However, the rigidity of existing middlewares makes development, reconfiguration, and testing rather difficult. In this work, we…
