From innovation to labour costs : Change of emphasis in Finnish competitiveness policy ideas after the Eurocrisis

Small open economies such as Finland are particularly exposed to international market competition. In this article, Finland is analysed as a competition state where the pursuit of international advantages is a policy priority. Previously, Finland has been argued to be an exemplar of an economy following a strategy of radical transformation via creatively utilizing corporatist institutions instead of relying mainly on liberal reforms. In the 1990s, Finnish policymakers adopted policy ideas that emphasize technological change, innovation and education as a means to competitive edges and pursued these goals in a coordinated manner. Cognitive consequences of the timing of puberty

In this paper, we use British cohort data to study the degree to which children at different stages of pubertal development at age 11 and 16 differ in their cognitive and behavioral outcomes at age 16 as well as in their completed educational attainment and adult earnings. Controlling for age 7 cognitive skills, region of birth, father's socioeconomic status and parents’ education, we show that boys’ late pubertal development is associated with lower levels of cognitive skills at 16, lower final educational attainment, and lower earnings in adulthood. The essay focuses in particular on some critical issues of the reform, which appears in many ways detached from the “living” reality of the world of amateur sports. Having equalized different situations the reform seems not to have taken into account the specificities and concrete attitudes of relationships existing in the multifaceted world of sport.

Artykuł podejmuje kwestię, która w literaturze przedmiotu oraz dyskursie prasowym została nazwana „eurosieroctwem”. Województwo opolskie jako region migracyjny od wielu lat zmaga się z niekorzystnymi skutkami zagranicznych wyjazdów zarobkowych. Dotyczy to zarówno zachowań migracyjnych ludności autochtonicznej, jak i nowych wyjazdów za granicę obserwowanych w województwie po akcesji do UE w 2004 r. Il volume analizza le tecnologie digitali e il loro impatto sui rapporti di lavoro. In particolare, tenuto conto dell'incidenza degli strumenti tecnologici sui vincoli gerarchici e sulla natura e le modalità di esercizio dei poteri dell’imprenditore nei confronti di chi presta lavoro, il volume si interroga sugli effetti specifici che ne derivano per i principi di dignità, libertà e sicurezza sanciti dalla Costituzione. Al contempo si indicano le soluzioni proposte dall’ordinamento giuridico sul piano della delimitazione di quei poteri e della salvaguardia di quei principi.
Does Labor Respond to Cyclical Fluctuations? The Case of Italy

The aim of this paper is to analyse whether labour mobility is likely to act as a sufficient adjustment mechanism in the face of asymmetric shocks in Italy. In particular, the paper examines if the interregional migration responds, among other factors, also to the GDP's regional cyclical component. The results show that interregional labour mobility appears to respond adequately to current and past cyclical fluctuations.
Labor-Market Returns to Higher Vocational Schooling

This paper examines the labor-market returns to a new form of postsecondary vocational education, vocational master's degrees. We use individual fixed effects models on the matched sample of students and non-students from Finland to capture any time-invariant differences across individuals. Attendance in vocational master's programs leads to higher earnings of eight percent five years after entry even if selection on unobservables is twice as strong as selection on observables. Earnings gains are similar by gender and age, but they are marginally higher for health than for business or technology and trades. nonPeerReviewed
