Finland’s great depression of the 1990s: Lessons about financial reform based on econometric macro evidence
2020
The paper re‐examines the Finnish Great Depression of the 1990s, based on an open macro model, with specific dummy variables to identify the initial effects of liberalized financial markets and capital mobility, and of the Russian trade collapse. It is shown that the explosive credit expansion resulting from the simultaneous liberalization of the financial markets and international capital movements in 1986 has played the most important role in explaining the uncontrolled growth and the subsequent depression in 1989 in real economic activity in Finland. Their effects were strengthened by a vicious circle between the financial and asset markets. The Russian trade collapse in 1991 had a small…
Kierunki modernizacji sieci kolejowej
2017
Opracowanie przedstawia kierunki modernizacji sieci kolejowej Polski w latach 2003-2017. Długość sieci kolejowej w kraju ulega zmniejszeniu. Zachodzi proces likwidacji linii i zawieszenia przewozów kolejowych. W kraju modernizowane są główne linie magistralne. Na modernizację składają się: wymiana torów, przebudowa trakcji elektrycznej i wprowadzenie nowoczesnych systemów sterowania ruchem i sygnalizacji (ECTS). Przebudowie ulęgają linie kolejowe o znaczeniu tranzytowym zaliczane do europejskiego układu połączeń kolejowych w ruchu pasażerskim (umowa AGC) i towarowym (umowa AGTC). Projekty modernizacji linii kolejowych są finansowane ze środków europejskich i krajowych. Główne źródła finanso…
Derivation of critical rainfall thresholds for landslide in Sicily
2015
Rainfall is the primary trigger of shallow landslides that can cause fatalities, damage to properties and economic losses in many areas of the world. For this reason, determining the rainfall amount/intensity responsible for landslide occurrence is important, and may contribute to mitigate the related risk and save lives. Efforts have been made in different countries to investigate triggering conditions in order to define landslide-triggering rainfall thresholds. The rainfall thresholds are generally described by a functional relationship of power in terms of cumulated or intensity event rainfall-duration, whose parameters are estimated empirically from the analysis of historical rainfall e…
Determinants of the interannual relationships between remote sensed photosynthetic activity and rainfall in tropical Africa
2007
International audience; The response of photosynthetic activity to interannual rainfall variations in Africa South of the Sahara is examined using 20 years (1981-2000) of Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) AVHRR data. Linear correlations and regressions were computed between annual NDVI and annual rainfall at a 0.5° latitude/longitude resolution, based on two gridded precipitation datasets (Climate Prediction Center Merged Analysis of Precipitation [CMAP] and Climatic Research Unit [CRU]). The spatial patterns were then examined to detect how they relate to the mean annual rainfall amounts, land-cover types as from the Global Land Cover 2000 data set, soil properties and soil typ…
A physically-based and distributed tool for modeling the hydrological and mechanical processes of shallow landslides
2015
This work presents the capabilities of a model, i.e. the tRIBS-VEGGIE-Landslide, in two different versions, i.e. developed within a probabilistic framework and coupled with a root cohesion module. The probabilistic model treats geotechnical and soil retention curve parameters as random variables across the basin and estimates theoretical probability distributions of slope stability and the associated “factor of safety” commonly used to describe the occurrence of shallow landslides. The derived distributions are used to obtain the spatiotemporal dynamics of probability of failure, conditioned on soil moisture dynamics at each watershed location. The framework has been tested in the Luquillo …
DEM-resolution control on rainfall-triggered landslide modeling within a triangulated network-based model
2019
Catchment slope distribution significantly controls rainfall-triggered landslide modeling, in both direct and indirect ways. Slope directly determines the soil volume associated with instability. Indirectly, it affects the subsurface lateral redistribution of soil moisture across the basin, which in turn determines the water pore pressure conditions that impact slope stability. It is thus clear that the accuracy in reproducing slope distribution may be crucial in slope stability analysis. The resolution of the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) regulates the description of the topography. The correlation between raster resolution and landslide model outputs has been investigated in the literatur…

Global Estimation of Biophysical Variables from Google Earth Engine Platform
2018
This paper proposes a processing chain for the derivation of global Leaf Area Index (LAI), Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR), Fraction Vegetation Cover (FVC), and Canopy water content (CWC) maps from 15-years of MODIS data exploiting the capabilities of the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud platform. The retrieval chain is based on a hybrid method inverting the PROSAIL radiative transfer model (RTM) with Random forests (RF) regression. A major feature of this work is the implementation of a retrieval chain exploiting the GEE capabilities using global and climate data records (CDR) of both MODIS surface reflectance and LAI/FAPAR datasets allowing the global estim…
Current Social and Rangeland Access Trends among Pastoralists in the Western Algerian Steppe
2021
International audience; In the western Algerian steppe, the public authorities have carried out actions aimed at rural development (agricultural development programs) and combating desertification (grazing reserves) to counter the significant and rapid loss of vegetation cover of pastures by overgrazing, and the consequent impacts on local livelihoods. In the Rogassa area, these actions have impacted land tenure and the ancestral and collective way of land use and access. These changes have caused transformations in lifestyle and pasture management. This research aims to characterize how such changes are affecting local pastoralists and what their perceptions are about them. A selective sam…
