Gendered Work-life Ideologies among IT Professionals
2022
The study investigates the discourses IT professionals use to produce work–life relations. We focus on work–life ideologies and explore the agencies produced, as well as whether and how they are gendered. Our data were collected in interviews with 24 women and men working in the IT industry in Finland. Our results show, first, that work–life relations were constructed discursively through two different work–life ideologies, and second, that these ideologies produced different gendered agencies in reconciling work with life. In our study, work–life talk produced different positions for women and men, which were influenced by gendered norms and social expectations. We conclude that gendered a…

2018
The homeland association movement in Germany is an important element of the social and political landscape of that country. The importance of this movement and its influence upon the political system of Germany underwent evolution. The greatest importance – in social aspect, but also in political aspect – characterised the initial twenty-year period of the existence of the Federal Republic of Germany, i.e. the years 1949–1969. Numerous connections that the movement leaders had with political parties, along with the participation in holding power (the representatives of the movement sat in federal governments as well), stood as evidence that the expelled and their organisations had tangible …

Feminists in High Heels : The Role of Femininity in Second-Wave Feminists' Dress in Finland, 1973-1990
2018
Recent studies have shown that the politics of self–presentation was a contentious issue among feminists. This article, which is based primarily on oral histories, addresses how Finnish second– wave feminists viewed the meanings of dress and appearance for their identity. The focus is on those who believed that feminist ideology liberated them to embrace their femininity and argues that Finnish feminist views about dress liberated women from the orthodox Marxist, pro–Russian Soviet political ideology of the Taistoist movement that was popular among young people in the 1970s, yet also from traditional, conservative female education at home and in school. peerReviewed
