Nonlinear black-box models for short-term forecasting of air temperature in the town of Palermo
2011
Weather data are crucial to correctly design buildings and their heating and cooling systems and to assess their energy performances. In the intensely urbanized towns the effect of climatic parameters is further emphasized by the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon, known as the increase in the air temperature of urban areas, compared to the one measured in the extra-urban areas. The analysis of the heat island needs detailed local climate data which can be collected only by a dedicated weather monitoring system. The Department of Energy and Environmental Researches of the University of Palermo (Italy) has built up a weather monitoring system that works 24 hours per day and makes data availa…
Strategy to re-active an urban landscape
2018
To re-activate an urban landscape, through a complex system of relationships, needs a goal: trigger a course of identification based on cultural heritage like an “ID card”. To do this, without losing the historical common memory, culture doesn’t have to be only for the “elite” but has to begin the raw nerve of the development. When Kevin Lynch wrote about wayfinding, it was not for tourists but for inhabitants whom daily live in that place: the field of “orientation” was essential for him like it was for Camillo Sitte. This theorist of urban planning (not fully understood) said that “the space and the city are important if they are active” and Wieczorek explains that “active” means the rule…
Aree verdi storiche e alberi monumentali: stimolo per un'efficace pianificazione delle infrastrutture verdi
2020
This study is based on the assumption that existing urban green areas can play a significant role in giving a boost to the effective development of linear infrastructures when conceived as green-blue corridors, capable to significantly affect in the production of the ecosystem services within the urban environment. The first phase of analysis, necessary to frame the case study, identified in the city of Palermo (Italy), the research focused on the ecological and social aspects of urban green, investigating its current values and potentials. The existing private and public parks and gardens have been combined with major areas of ecological relevance, whereas the monumental trees connect gree…
Land Consumption: A Multidisciplinary Approach to a Cross-Cutting Theme
2016
The idea of the book emerged from one-day conference with the title: The Consumption of Land and Urban Renewal from Agrigento and its Hinterland], held in May 2012 in Agrigento, Sicily, organised by the author. The conference, which saw the participation of interested citizens, has provided the opportunity to inform and raise awareness among the general public about the international issue of land consumption, starting from an analysis of the local situation, marked by its best-known variation: urban sprawl.
Abitare i paesaggi inattesi: DOM – e la pratica del cammino
2022
Urbanized territories have expanded invading the space and modifying the dynamics defined over the centuries of slow development, often making the city indistinguishable from the non-city. In this condition, an unforeseen form of landscape takes place and determines itself, unexpectedly interposing between the planned meshes. By appropriating spaces transitorily rejected by hyper-functionalization, wild environments nomadically occupy empty sites until a new order to come. The practice of walking to cross spaces is an experience of comprehension that allows human beings a renewed way of dwelling in the world. The article assumes that the design process over wild areas continue to occur thro…
Finland : Civic activities, growing participation, diversification, and professionalisation
2022
Football arrived in Finland with English seamen in the late nineteenth century. Although Finland engaged in international football as early as the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, football did not become a popular national game. The Football Association of Finland (FAF) emphasised that football should be developed according to amateur principles. Between the World Wars, football had to fight with the Finnish version of baseball (pesäpallo) for living space. Football has been a sport of the cities and urban areas and spread to the countryside slowly. Nevertheless, unlike in other sport domains with a split between non-socialist and workers’ sport movements until the 1990s, the FAF united the…

An Economic Assessment of Micro-Scale Use of Renewable Energy Sources: Two Case Studies
2015
During recent times, renewable energy technologies have shown a relative fast growth in the global energy investment, global energy capacity and their integration within multiple sectors, particularly in the electricity sector. Renewable energy technologies have also experienced notorious declining costs on their manufacturing production. Nevertheless, while this growth is widely acknowledged, the share of renewables with respect total energy production has been moderate. Technological advancements in renewable energy have demonstrated the potential of renewables in energy generation and also that renewables can provide direct and indirect advantages over their counterparts. This thesis inv…
Corporate Reputation and the News Media in Finland
2011
Finland makes an interesting case study for the news media on public’s images and opinions (Carroll & McCombs, 2003) for several reasons. First, the news media in Finland is dominated by one major newspaper (cf. Ainamo, 2003), and it is interesting to see whether there is great consensus in public opinion due to this homogeneity (for opposing views, see Moring 2005). Second, Finland is a relatively small country (5 million inhabitants) for both business and media, and it could be speculated that the news media’s effects are less visible than in larger countries (where diffusion of news occurs directly via social contagion). Third, Finland has been a breeding ground for top innovations and s…
