Random Walk and Diffusion

The concept of random walk as introduced by Einstein is introduced. It is shown that a random walk on a lattice can be descrbed by a difference equation, which becomes a partial differential equation (diffusion equation) in the continuum limit. The equation is solved with the help of Fourier and Laplace transformations.

Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tarkoituksena oli kartoittaa peruskouluikäisten sijoitettujen lasten ja nuorten koulunkäynnin tukemiseksi toteutetut interventiotutkimukset. Tavoitteena oli koota yhteenveto aiheelle relevantista kansain-välisestä tutkimuksesta, jotta esimerkiksi kasvatusalan ammattilaiset voisivat soveltaa tutkimuksesta saatuja tuloksia omaan käytännön työhönsä ja näin tu-kea sijoitettujen lasten ja nuoren koulunkäyntiä mahdollisimman tehokkaasti. Reconsidering passivity and activity in children’s digital play

The discussion around children’s digital game culture has resulted in two contradictory images of children: the passive, antisocial children uncritically and mechanically consuming digital game content and the active, social children creatively using and interacting with digital game content. Our aim is to examine how these seemingly contradictory ideas of “active” and “passive” children could be considered. By means of empirical examples of children playing digital dress-up and makeover games, we will point out that for the successful use of these concepts, they need to be thoroughly contextualized. An examination of nonresponse in a study on daily family life: I do not have time to participate, but I can tell you something about our life

The aim of this study was to look at the issue of nonresponse and self-selection bias in the context of a family study on daily family life. Data on the participating families and refusers were gathered as part of the wider Palette study in which questionnaires and diaries were used as data collection methods. On the basis of these data (N = 208 participating families and 119 refuser families), we profile the families left outside the study. The parents who declined to participate in the Palette study were asked to fill in a short refusal form, which included questions concerning their family background and reasons for refusal, and they were also asked to write freely about their everyday l…
