Sudden upper airway obstruction in patients with hereditary angioedema.
2003
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is clinically characterized by recurrent and self-limiting skin, intestinal, and life-threatening laryngeal edema. This study describes the age at which laryngeal edema first occurred, the time between onset and full development, and the effectiveness of therapy and prophylaxis in 123 HAE patients. 61 (49.7%) patients experienced a total of 596 laryngeal edema episodes. The ratio of laryngeal edema episodes to skin swellings and abdominal pain attacks was approximately 1:70:54 in patients who had laryngeal edema. The mean (SD) age at the first laryngeal edema was 26.2 (15.3) years. Nearly 80% of the laryngeal edemas occurred between age 11 and 45. The mean interv…

Swallowing disorders after thyroidectomy: What we know and where we are. A systematic review.
2017
Abstract Introduction Dysphagia and hoarseness are possible complications that can be observed in patients undergoing thyroidectomy or other neck surgery procedures. These complaints are usually related to superior and inferior laryngeal nerves dysfunction, but these can appear even after uncomplicated surgical procedure. Methods We reviewed the current literature available on MEDLINE database, concerning the swallowing disorders appearing after the thyroidectomy. The articles included in the review reported pathophysiology and diagnostic concerns. Results Twenty articles were selected for inclusion in the review. Depends on the possible causes of the difficulty swallowing (related to nerve…
Acute Laryngitis in the Rat Induced by Moraxella catarrhalis and Bordetella pertussis: Number of Neutrophils, Dendritic Cells, and T and B Lymphocyte…
1999
Infectious laryngotracheitis results in fulminant respiratory distress. During the disease, the subglottic mucosa is selectively infected and swollen, the reason for this preference being unknown. Therefore, in the present study the immunoreaction of the laryngeal mucosa was studied in the rat after inhalation of either heat-killed Moraxella catarrhalis (PVG rats) or application of viable Bordetella pertussis (BN rats). The number of neutrophils, macrophages, dendritic cells, and T and B lymphocytes was determined in the mucosa of the supraglottic, glottic, and subglottic area of the larynx as well as in the trachea. After application of the pathogens, the mucosa of the subglottic area was …
Different patterns of cytokeratin expression in the normal epithelia of the upper respiratory tract
1985
The distribution and type of cytokeratins present in the normal human epithelia of the nasopharynx, oropharynx, tongue, palatine tonsil, epiglottis, vocal cord, and laryngeal ventricle were studied using immunohistochemical techniques and by gel electrophoresis of cytoskeletal proteins microdissected from frozen tissues. Noncornifying stratified epithelia covering the oropharynx, tongue, surface of the palatine tonsil, pharyngeal surface of the epiglottis, and vocal cord were all found to contain cytokeratins nos. 4, 5, 6, 13, 14, and 15, together with minor amounts of cytokeratin no. 19, i.e., a pattern similar to that previously reported for esophageal epithelium. The immunohistochemical …
Downregulation of RhoB GTPase confers resistance to cisplatin in human larygneal carcinoma cells
2009
Acquired resistance to cisplatin represents a major obstacle to an efficient chemotherapy. We found downregulation of RhoB expression in cisplatin-resistant tumor cell lines from different origin. In cisplatin-resistant laryngeal carcinoma subline overexpression of farnesylated or geranylgeranylated RhoB increased cisplatin-induced cell death, while silencing of RhoB expression diminished sensitivity of parental HEp-2 cells via decreased cellular accumulation of cisplatin. However, since RhoB silencing in additional tumor cell lines did not alter their sensitivity to cisplatin, we can assume that RhoB downregulation does not provide general protective role in cell response to cisplatin. Nev…
Elevated tumor lactate concentrations predict for an increased risk of metastases in head-and-neck cancer.
2001
Purpose: Hypoxia shifts the balance of cellular energy production toward glycolysis with lactate generation as a by-product. Quantitative bioluminescence imaging allows for the quantitation of lactate concentrations in individual tumors. We assessed the relationship between pretreatment tumor lactate concentrations and subsequent development of metastatic disease in patients with newly diagnosed head-and-neck cancer. Methods and Materials: At the time of biopsy of the primary site, a separate specimen was taken and flash-frozen for subsequent quantitation of lactate concentration using a luciferase bioluminescence technique. The twodimensional spatial distribution of the bioluminescence int…

Endoplasmic reticulum stress is involved in response of human laryngeal carcinoma cells to carboplatin but is absent in carboplatin resistant cells
2013
The major obstacle of successful tumor treatment with carboplatin (CBP) is the development of drug resistance. In the present study, we found that following treatment with CBP the amount of platinum which enters the human laryngeal carcinoma (HEp2)-derived CBP- resistant (7T) cells is reduced relative to the parental HEp2. As a consequence, the formation of reactive oxidative species (ROS) is reduced, the induction of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is diminished, the amount of inter- and intrastrand cross-links is lower, and the induction of apoptosis is depressed. In HEp2 cells, ROS scavenger tempol, inhibitor of ER stress salubrinal, as well as gene silencing of ER stress marker CCAAT/…
