The performance of thin layers produced by molecular plating as α-particle sources

Abstract Sources for α-spectroscopy studies were prepared. Constant current density molecular plating was used to produce layers containing the α-particle emitter 147 Sm. Different parameters of the molecular plating process were varied, namely the plating solvent (an isopropanol/isobutanol mixture, pyridine, and N , N -dimethylformamide), the applied deposition time (90, 180, and 360 min), and the surface roughness of the deposition substrate (ca. 10, 20, and 300 nm). Non-destructive diagnostics of thin fissile layers

We have developed a non-destructive nuclear technique useful for the diagnostic of thin layers of fissile element. The method is based on the correlation between the fission fragment energy losses and the distortion of the energy spectrum of the alpha-particles emerging from the layer itself. We have also measured the sputtering rate of atoms from a fission layer which can be the cause of an important degradation in a working apparatus.

Complex singularity analysis for vortex layer flows

We study the evolution of a 2D vortex layer at high Reynolds number. Vortex layer flows are characterized by intense vorticity concentrated around a curve. In addition to their intrinsic interest, vortex layers are relevant configurations because they are regularizations of vortex sheets. In this paper, we consider vortex layers whose thickness is proportional to the square-root of the viscosity. We investigate the typical roll-up process, showing that crucial phases in the initial flow evolution are the formation of stagnation points and recirculation regions. Mean-Field Game Modeling the Bandwagon Effect with Activation Costs

This paper provides a mean-field game theoretic model of the bandwagon effect in social networks. This effect can be observed whenever individuals tend to align their own opinions to a mainstream opinion. The contribution is threefold. First, we describe the opinion propagation as a mean-field game with local interactions. Second, we establish mean-field equilibrium strategies in the case where the mainstream opinion is constant. Such strategies are shown to have a threshold structure. Third, we extend the use of threshold strategies to the case of time-varying mainstream opinion and study the evolution of the macroscopic system.

Pore formation by Vibrio cholerae cytolysin requires cholesterol in both monolayers of the target membrane

Vibrio cholerae cytolysin (VCC) forms oligomeric transmembrane pores in cholesterol-rich membranes. To better understand this process, we used planar bilayer membranes. In symmetric membranes, the rate of the channel formation by VCC has a superlinear dependency on the cholesterol membrane fraction. Thus, more than one cholesterol molecule can facilitate VCC-pore formation. In asymmetric membranes, the rate of pore formation is limited by the leaflet with the lower cholesterol content. Staphylococcal alpha-toxin is a primarily hydrophilic molecule that binds as a monomer to target membranes and then aggregates to form amphiphilic oligomers that represent water-filled transmembrane channels. Current evidence indicates that a region located in the center of the molecule inserts deeply into the bilayer. Abstract The influence of lipid bilayer properties on a defined and sequence-specific transmembrane helix–helix interaction is not well characterized yet. To study the potential impact of changing bilayer properties on a sequence-specific transmembrane helix–helix interaction, we have traced the association of fluorescent-labeled glycophorin A transmembrane peptides by fluorescence spectroscopy in model membranes with varying lipid compositions.
