How representative are referendums? Evidence from 20 years of Swiss referendums

Direct democracy allows citizens to reverse decisions made by legislatures and even initiate new laws which parliaments are unwilling to pass, thereby, as its proponents argue, leading to more representative policies than would have obtained under a purely representative democracy. Yet, turnout in referendums is usually lower than in parliamentary elections and tends to be skewed towards citizens of high socio-economic status. Consequently, critics of direct democracy argue that referendum outcomes may not be representative of the preferences of the population at large. A comparative investigation on the acute phototoxicity of retene to vendace (Coregonus albula) and whitefish (C. lavaretus), both having pelagial larvae in spring, was conducted. To test the concept of early warning of sublethal biomarkers in relation to lethality to posthatch stages, we examined the effects of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) and retene on the levels of cytochrome P4501A (CYP1A) and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) by exposing the animals to elevated levels of these factors for 48 and 72 h, respectively. Ziemeļu gulbis ir Latvijā ligzdojoša putnu suga, kas pasaulē ir sastopama plašā diapazonā lielākoties Eiropā un Eirāzijas ziemeļos. Darbā tika veikta polimorfo uz retrotranspozoniem balstītu iPBS praimeru atlase, lai noteiktu Ziemeļu gulbju ģenētisko daudzveidību. Darbā izmantoti Ziemeļu gulbju paraugi tika ievākti Kurzemes reģionā. Polimerāzes ķēdes reakcijas (PCR) produkti tika vizualizēti agarozes gēla elektroforēzē. Atlasītajam praimerim 2075 kopumā tika konstatēti 31 lokusi ar 28 polimorfiem lokusiem (90.32 %) Darbā apskatītās 22 ligzdu ģenētiskā līdzība ir augstāka par 77%. Research in Education and Learning Innovation Archives (REALIA) es el nuevo nombre de la revista que desde 2008 y hasta 2018 publicó el Servei de Formació i Innovació Educativa de la Universitat de València.. Al igual que antes lo han hecho otras, en 2019 @tic revista d’innovacióeducativa ha cambiado su nombre. En este texto se repasan los diez años de historia de @tic revista d’innovació educativa, se exponen los motivos de ese cambio y se presentan las novedades introducidas y algunas perspectivas de futuro.
Delivery of proteins into living cells by reversible membrane permeabilization with streptolysin-O

The pore-forming toxin streptolysin O (SLO) can be used to reversibly permeabilize adherent and nonadherent cells, allowing delivery of molecules with up to 100 kDa mass to the cytosol. Using FITC-labeled albumin, 10 5 –10 6 molecules were estimated to be entrapped per cell. Repair of toxin lesions depended on Ca 2+ -calmodulin and on intact microtubules, but was not sensitive to actin disruption or to inhibition of protein synthesis. Activation of astroglial phospholipase D activity by phorbol ester involves ARF and Rho proteins.

Primary cultures of rat cortical astrocytes express phospholipase D (PLD) isoforms 1 and 2 as determined by RT-PCR and Western blot. Basal PLD activity was strongly (10-fold) increased by 4beta-phorbol-12beta,13alpha-dibutyrate (PDB) (EC(50): 56 nM), an effect which was inhibited by Ro 31-8220 (0.1-1 microM), an inhibitor of protein kinase C (PKC), and by brefeldin A (10-100 microg/ml), an inhibitor of ADP-ribosylating factor (ARF) activation. Pretreatment of the cultures with Clostridium difficile toxin B-10463 (0.1-1 ng/ml), which inactivates small G proteins of the Rho family, led to a breakdown of the astroglial cytoskeleton; concomitantly, PLD activation by PDB was reduced by up to 50%…
