The preservation of the Agrigento Cathedral

2013

The Agrigento Cathedral was built about nine centuries ago on the edge of a steep slope made up of alternating inclined layers of soft calcarenites and fine-grained soils; its behaviour has never been satisfactory especially as far as the North aisle is concerned. Many corrective measures have been attempted during its lifespan and also a few years ago. They proved invariably unsuccessful. Recent geotechnical investigations, referred to in the paper, permitted to find out that the main cause of the Cathedral distress is a sliding mechanism involving the upper zone of the slope underlying the North aisle; consequently the essential requirement for the preservation of the Cathedral is the sta…

Lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles: combining Environmental and Social Life Cycle Assessments

2018

Electric vehicles (xEV) are a key low carbon technology for mobility. Although xEV have no tailpipe emissions, the production of traction batteries leads to environmental and social burdens. In this context, authors assess the environmental and social impacts of a cell of Lithium ion traction battery in order to identify the most relevant aspects and the potential added value of performing both the assessments. Results show the relevance of the resources in terms of both environmental and social impacts. Moreover, the social assessment results pointed out the relevance of the geographical boundaries, often overlooked for in the environmental analysis. The combination of both the assessment …

Gas geochemistry of shallow submarine vents in the Aegean sea (Greece)

2017

The Aegean area, which is geodynamically very active, is characterised by intense seismic activity, presence of active volcanic systems and anomalous geothermal gradients. Like other regions of intense geodynamic activity it is also characterized by extensive geogenic degassing. Gas manifestations are not only widespread on land but are also very frequent underwater. Many of these, as for example those of Milos and Santorini, are known since long time and have been previously studied although the targets were generally the hot waters or the sediments affected by the emissions (Smith and Cronan 1978, Dando et al. 1995, Price et al. 2013, Megalovassilis 2014).The present study aims at produci…

H2S fluxes from Mt. Etna, Stromboli and Vulcano (Italy) and implications for the global volcanic sulfur budget

2005

We present here new measurements of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide emissions from Vulcano, Etna, and Stromboli (Italy), made by direct sampling at vents and by filter pack and ultraviolet spectroscopy in downwind plumes. Measurements at the F0 and FA fumaroles on Vulcano yielded SO2/H2S molar ratios of 0.38 and 1.4, respectively, from which we estimate an H2S flux of 6 to 9 t · d 1 for the summit crater. For Mt. Etna and Stromboli, we found SO2/H2S molar ratios of 20 and 15, respectively, which combined with SO2 flux measurements, suggest H2S emission rates of 50 to 113 t · d 1 and 4 to 8 t · d 1, respectively. We observe that “source” and plume SO2/H2S ratios at Vulcano are similar, s…
