Geochemical characteristics of waters in mineralised area of Peloritani Mountains (Sicily, Italy)

2009

Abstract This paper presents the results of a study on the geochemistry of waters circulating in the mineralised area of the south-eastern sector of Mt. Peloritani (north-eastern Sicily, Italy), aimed at basic understanding of the geochemical processes influencing their chemical composition. Chemico-physical parameters and data on 26 major and minor chemical elements are reported for 103 water samples. Water chemistry is mainly dominated by dissolution of carbonates and hydrolysis of aluminosilicate minerals. Total dissolved salts (TDS) range from 80 to 1398 mg/L. All the waters exhibit E H characteristic of an oxygenated environment. Excluding two samples, which show very high H + activity…

Sicilian bottled natural waters: Major and trace inorganic components

2013

Sixteen bottled waters of various Sicilian brands, 11 natural mineral waters and five normal drinking waters, were analyzed for major and trace inorganic components by ion chromatography (IC) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), respectively. The bottled waters represent a variety of water types with significantly different compositions in terms of salinity, major components and trace elements. Chemically, they range from Ca–HCO3 and Ca–SO4 to Na–HCO3 types. Total dissolved solids ranges from 54 to 433 mg/L, total hardness from 25 to 238 mg/L CaCO3, and measured Na content from 5.7 to 57 mg/L. According to total dissolved ions, all the bottled waters were classified as…

Synthesis of novel polypyridylcarbonylpyridines from triazolopyridines. Building blocks in supramolecular chemistry

2009

The synthesis from triazolopyridines 1, of novel triazolopyridylcarbonylpyridylcarbonyltriazolopyridines (TPyCOPyCOTPy) (tpcpctp) 7, and polypyridylcarbonylpyridines (pPyCOPy) (ppcp) 14, building blocks in supramolecular chemistry, is described. These compounds are interesting polynitrogenated ligands as potential molecular sensors, new magnetic materials, single molecular magnets, or in the emerging science of nanomaterials. Comparison of the greenhouse gas emissions of a high-rise residential building assessed with different national LCA approaches– IEA EBC Annex 72

2020

Introduction: The international research project IEA EBC Annex 72 investigates the life cycle related environmental impacts caused by buildings. The project aims inter alia to harmonise LCA approaches on buildings. Methods: To identify major commonalities and discrepancies among national LCA approaches, reference buildings were defined to present and compare the national approaches. A residential high-rise building located in Tianjin, China, was selected as one of the reference buildings. The main construction elements are reinforced concrete shear walls, beams and floor slabs. The building has an energy reference area of 4566 m2 and an operational heating energy demand of 250 MJ/m2a. An ex…

Chlorophyll a Fluorescence Emission, Xanthophyll Cycle Activity, and Net Photosynthetic Rate Responses to Ozone in Some Foliose and Fruticose Lichen …

2000

The lichens Parmelia quercina, Parmelia sulcata, Evernia prunastri, Hypogymnia physodes, and Anaptychia ciliaris were exposed to ozone (O3) in controlled environment cuvettes designed to maintain the lichens at optimal physiological activity during exposure. Measurements of gas exchange, modulated chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence, and pigment analysis were conducted before and after exposure to 300 mm3 (O3) m−3, 4 h per d for 14 d. No changes in the efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2) photochemistry, the reduction state of QA, or the electron flow through PS2, measured by Chl fluorescence, were detected in any of the five lichen species studied. Additionally, neither photosynthetic CO2 assimila…

Environmental RNA outperforms eDNA metabarcoding in assessing impact of marine pollution: A chromium-spiked mesocosm test

2022

Environmental (e)DNA metabarcoding holds great promise for biomonitoring and ecotoxicological applications. However, few studies have compared the performance of eDNA versus eRNA metabarcoding in assessing organismal response to marine pollution, in experimental conditions. Here, we performed a chromium (Cr)-spiked mesocosm experimental test on benthic foraminiferal community to investigate the effects on species diversity by analysing both eDNA and eRNA metabarcoding data across different Cr concentrations in the sediment. Foraminiferal diversity in the eRNA data showed a significant negative correlation with the Cr concentration in the sediment, while a positive response was observed in t…

Excimer laser technology in percutaneous coronary interventions: Cardiovascular laser society's position paper

2022

Excimer Laser Coronary Atherectomy (ELCA) is a well-established therapy that emerged for the treatment of peripheral vascular atherosclerosis in the late 1980s, at a time when catheters and materials were rudimentary and associated with the most serious complications. Refinements in catheter technology and the introduction of improved laser techniques have led to their effective use for the treatment of a wide spectrum of complex coronary lesions, such as thrombotic lesions, severe calcific lesions, non-crossable or non-expandable lesions, chronic occlusions, and stent under-expansion. The gradual introduction of high-energy strategies combined with the contrast infusion technique has enabl…

On the Volcanology of the West Eifel Maars

1987

The Quaternary alkali-basaltic volcanic field of the West Eifel is the classic maar region of the world. Related to the formation of the continental rift zone which extends through Central Europe, ultrabasic magmas rose from the upper mantle through the continental crust and fed 240 small volcanoes. Next to scoria cones with their lava flows, maars are most frequent and represent 25% of the volcanoes. Since 1820 and until 1970 their origin was mostly believed to be related to explosive exsolution of juvenile volatile phases. Since 1970, however, several authors have suggested that the West Eifel maars are phreatomagmatic in origin, i.e. rising magma contacted groundwater in near-surface lev…
