Esthetic and functional oral makeover of a 3 year old cleft palate patient suffering from early childhood caries using unconventional techniques

2011

Cleft lip and palate (CL/P) are the most common congenital craniofacial anomalies. It has been observed that these children have a higher caries experience compared their non cleft counterparts. Early childhood caries results in early pulp involvement and gross destruction of the anterior and posterior teeth. This leads to decreased masticatory efficiency, difficulty in speech, compromised esthetics, development of abnormal tongue habits and subsequent malocclusion and psychological problems. The restoration of severely decayed deciduous teeth especially anteriors presents a special challenge to dentists, particularly in uncooperative children. The following case report documents the restor…

Leisure-Time Sedentary Behavior and Obesity Among 116,762 Adolescents Aged 12-15 Years from 41 Low- and Middle-Income Countries

2019

Objective: Rates of adolescent obesity are increasing worldwide, with steeper increases being observed in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Sedentary behavior (SB) has been associated with various physical and mental health conditions. Little is known about the association between SB and obesity among adolescents in LMICs. This cross-sectional study explored the associations between SB and obesity in adolescents from 41 LMICs. Methods: Obesity was measured using BMI; SB was assessed through self-report and was considered for all times except when subjects were at school or doing homework. Results: Data from the Global School-based Student Health Survey were analyzed in 116,762 adole…

The Specific Role of Childhood Abuse, Parental Bonding, and Family Functioning in Female Adolescents With Borderline Personality Disorder.

2015

This study examined a broad variety of adverse childhood experiences in a consecutive sample of female adolescent inpatients with borderline personality disorder (BPD; n = 44) compared with a clinical control (CC; n = 47) group with mixed psychiatric diagnoses. BPD was diagnosed using a structured clinical interview; different dimensions of childhood adversity were assessed using the Childhood Experiences of Care and Abuse Questionnaire, the Parental Bonding Instrument, and the Family Assessment Device. A history of childhood adversity was significantly more common in patients with BPD than in the CC group. Using a multivariate model, sexual abuse (OR = 13.8), general family functioning (OR…

Cumbersome but desirable—Breaking the code of everyday cycling

2020

IntroductionCycling for transport could integrate physical activity (PA) into daily routines and potentially increase total PA levels. However, for parents with young children, most factors affecting transport mode choice tend to facilitate car use. Greater insight is necessary into reasons for (not) using sustainable transport modes in parents with young children. Therefore, the objective of this study was to explore the experiences, including motives, perceptions, attitudes, and norms, of parents of young children by using an e-bike, a longtail bike, and a traditional bike for everyday travel to the workplace, kindergarten, and the grocery store during the autumn, winter, and spring, in n…

Changes in children's sleep domains between 2 and 3 years of age: the Ulm SPATZ Health Study

2017

Abstract Objective There is growing interest in the link between sleep habits and child health but reference values specific to toddlers as well as longitudinal data on sleep are scarce. We aimed to describe parent-reported child sleep habits and their intra-individual changes in 2- to 3-year-olds using data from a regional birth cohort study. Methods In the Ulm SPATZ Health Study, a birth cohort study conducted at Ulm, Southern Germany, with baseline examination from April 2012 to May 2013, the German version of the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ-DE) was used longitudinally at follow-ups at 2 and 3 years ( N = 615 children). Descriptive statistics including intra-individual di…

Higher aggression is related to poorer academic performance in compulsory education

2019

Background To conduct a comprehensive assessment of the association between aggression and academic performance in compulsory education. Method We studied aggression and academic performance in over 27,000 individuals from four European twin cohorts participating in the ACTION consortium (Aggression in Children: Unraveling gene‐environment interplay to inform Treatment and InterventiON strategies). Individual level data on aggression at ages 7–16 were assessed by three instruments (Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment, Multidimensional Peer Nomination Inventory, Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire) including parental, teacher and self‐reports. Academic performance was measu…

Children’s life world as a perspective on their citizenship: The case of the Finnish Children’s Parliament

2012

The latest childhood studies present children’s citizenship as a process of engaging in matters related to children themselves in their everyday lives. However, only a few studies have been conducted on what those issues are and what they actually tell about children’s citizenship. This study explores the nature of children’s participation and citizenship by adopting a life world perspective. The aim is to examine what kind of issues children want to participate in and influence. The data are drawn from an online discussion in the Finnish Children’s Parliament. Altogether 61 children participated in the discussion, with 566 postings. The analysis of the children’s online discussion shows t…

Exposure to benzene and childhood leukaemia: a pilot case-control study

2013

Objectives Main purpose To evaluate the feasibility of a measurement-based assessment of benzene exposure in case-control studies of paediatric cancer; Additional aims To identify the sources of exposure variability; to assess the performance of two benzene biomarkers; to verify the occurrence of participation bias; to check whether exposures to benzene and to 50 Hz magnetic fields were correlated, and might exert reciprocal confounding effects. Design Pilot case-control study of childhood leukaemia and exposure to benzene assessed by repeated seasonal weekly measurements in breathing zone air samples and outside the children9s dwellings, with concurrent determinations of cotinine, t-t-muco…

ACUTE INFANTILE SPINAL MUSCULAR ATROPHY

1990

Biopsy as well as autopsy studies of a child who died 8 weeks after birth from the acute infantile form of spinal muscular atrophy revealed classical morphological changes, including degeneration and loss of motoneurons in the spinal cord, loss of large myelinated fibres in anterior roots and neurogenic atrophy in muscle. New ultrastructural findings include massive muscle cell elimination by apoptosis with the formation of membrane-bound muscle cell fragments, apoptotic bodies. In addition, numerous immature muscle fibres were observed. The morphological findings raise the possibility that in a severely growth-retarded muscle, the process of muscle cell apoptosis removes the peripheral tar…
