Introduction: The Ambivalence of Documentation in Institutional Contexts of Early Childhood

2020

Documentation, as a term, encompasses very different instruments and procedures. In early childhood institutions, the amount of documentation has increased due to both professional interests and external requirements. The edited volume considers documentation as constitutive in any institution and as possessing agentic power in institutions. Therefore, the key interest of the book is research into the ways in which documentation becomes productive in situ in early childhood institutions. The focus is on research that considers documentation from three viewpoints: as a means of normalisation, as being interlinked with participation, and as reflecting a changing professionalism.

CHILDHOOD: WHAT WE UNDERSTAND AND DO NOT UNDERSTAND

2019

"What is childhood?" - an educated person today would answer that childhood is the stage of a child’s growing up to achieve social maturity and becoming a  responsible member of society. A person when he/she is at the life period between infancy and youth is not recognized as an adult (Hanson, 2009). Blonsky noted that 33% of a person’s life-span belongs to his/her childhood (Blonskis, 1920). The stages of human childhood are a product of history. These are subject to changes just like thousands of years ago. Historically, childhood is not mainly related to the state of biological maturity, but to the specific social status of a person which manifests itself in the roles of duties and right…

Survey of midwives' knowledge of caries prevention in perinatal care.

2014

Purpose To assess midwives' knowledge about oral health and early caries prevention during perinatal care for mothers and babies. Study design and methods A survey developed by the investigators was conducted among midwives to assess their knowledge about caries etiology, their attitude toward their role in early caries prevention, and prophylactic measures recommended during pregnancy, and after birth, for their babies. Self-administered questionnaires were sent to 180 midwives in hospitals and 323 midwives from a midwives' association in Hesse, Germany. Results Response rates were 46% (83/180) and 56% (181/323); a total of 264 questionnaires were evaluated. Most midwives were familiar wit…

Maternal Metabolic Health Parameters During Pregnancy in Relation to Early Childhood BMI Trajectories

2018

Objective The objective of this study was to evaluate the associations between maternal metabolic parameters and early childhood BMI trajectories. Methods Two thousand two hundred fifty-one children born in Spain between 2004 and 2008 were analyzed. Five BMI z score trajectories from birth to age 4 years were identified by using latent class growth analysis. Multinomial regression assessed the associations between maternal metabolic parameters and offspring's BMI trajectories. Results Children in the reference BMI trajectory had average size at birth followed by a slower BMI gain. Maternal prepregnancy obesity was associated with trajectories of accelerated BMI gain departing from either hi…

Association between prenatal maternal cigarette smoking and early childhood caries. A systematic review.

2017

Background The aim of the present study was to assess the relationship between prenatal maternal cigarette smoking (PMCS) and early childhood caries (ECC) through a systematic review of currently available scientific evidence. Material and methods To address the focused question: "Is there an association between PMCS and ECC?" an electronic literature search without time or language restrictions was conducted till May 2017 in indexed databases using various key words including dental caries, pregnancy, smoking, tobacco products and child. Letters to the editor, commentaries, reviews, case reports and case series and studies in which, ECC was investigated without clinical dental examination,…

A homozygous mutation in the TUB gene associated with retinal dystrophy and obesity.

2013

Inherited retinal dystrophies are a major cause of childhood blindness. Here, we describe the identification of a homozygous frameshift mutation (c.1194_1195delAG, p.Arg398Serfs*9) in TUB in a child from a consanguineous UK Caucasian family investigated using autozygosity mapping and whole-exome sequencing. The proband presented with obesity, night blindness, decreased visual acuity, and electrophysiological features of a rod cone dystrophy. The mutation was also found in two of the proband's siblings with retinal dystrophy and resulted in mislocalization of the truncated protein. In contrast to known forms of retinal dystrophy, including those caused by mutations in the tubby-like protein …

Outcome of patients with elevated LDH treated with first-line targeted therapy (TT) or PD-1 based immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI)

2019

Abstract Background Elevated LDH is a known predictive and prognostic factor correlating with poor response rates and survival in patients (pts) with metastatic melanoma (MM) treated with targeted therapy (BRAF plus MEK inhibitors, TT) or immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI). Whether TT or ICI in this subgroup of pts is more beneficial is unknown. Methods Pts with MM and elevated LDH who started first-line therapy between March 2016 and June 2017 were retrospectively identified from 25 melanoma centers. The cohort was divided into 2 groups: pts receiving TT first-line (TT group) and ICI first-line (ICI group). Primary endpoints were overall response rate (ORR), progression-free survival (PFS)…

Sand play may be a significant determinant of health and development in early childhood, but systematically synthesised evidence is absent in the literature. The main objective of this study was to present a planned methodology to systematically review, and synthesise, the evidence regarding sand play and its associations with 0–8-year-old children’s health and development. The systematic review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols statement was registered to PROSPERO (CRD42021253852). Literature searches will be conducted using information from eight electronic databases. Studies will be included when participating children were aged 0–…
