The Large Area Detector of LOFT: the Large Observatory for X-ray Timing

2014

LOFT (Large Observatory for X-ray Timing) is one of the five candidates that were considered by ESA as an M3 mission (with launch in 2022-2024) and has been studied during an extensive assessment phase. It is specifically designed to perform fast X-ray timing and probe the status of the matter near black holes and neutron stars. Its pointed instrument is the Large Area Detector (LAD), a 10 m 2 -class instrument operating in the 2-30keV range, which holds the capability to revolutionise studies of variability from X-ray sources on the millisecond time scales. The LAD instrument has now completed the assessment phase but was not down-selected for launch. However, during the assessment, most o…

LOFT: the Large Observatory For X-ray Timing

2012

The LOFT mission concept is one of four candidates selected by ESA for the M3 launch opportunity as Medium Size missions of the Cosmic Vision programme. The launch window is currently planned for between 2022 and 2024. LOFT is designed to exploit the diagnostics of rapid X-ray flux and spectral variability that directly probe the motion of matter down to distances very close to black holes and neutron stars, as well as the physical state of ultra-dense matter. These primary science goals will be addressed by a payload composed of a Large Area Detector (LAD) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM). The LAD is a collimated (<1 degree field of view) experiment operating in the energy range 2-50 keV,…

On-Line Measurement of Gaseous Iodine Species During a PWR Severe Accident

2015

International audience; Iodine is a highly radio-toxic element, due to its affinity to the thyroid, and represents the major part of the radioactivity released during a nuclear accident. In the context of nuclear safety and radio-protection, we are interested in identifying the iodine gaseous species which are released, in the nuclear power plants, under molecular (I$_2$) and organic (CH$_3$I) forms. Therefore, we are working on providing a spectroscopic database for both species. While the infrared spectrum of the ν6 band of methyl iodide was previously studied, only 4000 lines were assigned. We present the rovibrational analysis of a high quality experimental spectrum, of this band, recor…

Prospects for advanced electron cyclotron resonance and electron beam ion source charge breeding methods for EURISOL

2011

International audience; As the most ambitious concept of isotope separation on line (ISOL) facility, EURISOL aims at producing unprecedented intensities of post-accelerated radioactive isotopes. Charge breeding, which transforms the charge state of radioactive beams from 1+ to an n+ charge state prior to postacceleration, is a key technology which has to overcome the following challenges: high charge states for high energies, efficiency, rapidity and purity. On the roadmap to EURISOL, a dedicated R&D is being undertaken to push forward the frontiers of the present state-of-the-art techniques which use either electron cyclotron resonance or electron beam ion sources. We describe here the gui…

Plasma diagnostic tools for ECR ion sources : What can we learn from these experiments for the next generation sources

2019

International audience; The order-of-magnitude performance leaps of ECR ion sources over the past decades result from improvements to the magnetic plasma confinement, increases in the microwave heating frequency, and techniques to stabilize the plasma at high densities. Parallel to the technical development of the ion sources themselves, significant effort has been directed into the development of their plasma diagnostic tools. We review the recent results of Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS) plasma diagnostics highlighting a number of selected examples of plasma density, electron energy distribution, and ion confinement time measurements, obtained mostly with the second-gener…

Application of mobile aerosol and trace gas measurements for the investigation of megacity air pollution emissions: the Paris metropolitan area

2013

For the investigation of megacity emission development and the impact outside the source region, mobile aerosol and trace gas measurements were carried out in the Paris metropolitan area between 1 July and 31 July 2009 (summer conditions) and 15 January and 15 February 2010 (winter conditions) in the framework of the European Union FP7 MEGAPOLI project. Two mobile laboratories, MoLa and MOSQUITA, were deployed, and here an overview of these measurements and an investigation of the applicability of such measurements for the analysis of megacity emissions are presented. Both laboratories measured physical and chemical properties of fine and ultrafine aerosol particles as well as gas phase con…

Titan's 3-micron spectral region from ISO high-resolution spectroscopy

2006

Abstract The near-infrared spectrum of Titan, Saturn's largest moon and one of the Cassini/Huygens' space mission primary targets, covers the 0.8 to 5 micron region in which it shows several weak CH 4 absorption regions, and in particular one centered near 2.75 micron. Due to the interference of telluric absorption, only part of this window region (2.9–3.1 μm) has previously been observed from the ground [Noll, K.S., Geballe, T.R., Knacke, R., Pendleton, F., Yvonne, J., 1996. Evaluation of observed and modelled aerosol lifetimes using radioactive tracers of opportunity and an ensemble of 19 global models

2015

Abstract. Aerosols have important impacts on air quality and climate, but the processes affecting their removal from the atmosphere are not fully understood and are poorly constrained by observations. This makes modelled aerosol lifetimes uncertain. In this study, we make use of an observational constraint on aerosol lifetimes provided by radionuclide measurements and investigate the causes of differences within a set of global models. During the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear power plant accident of March 2011, the radioactive isotopes cesium-137 (137Cs) and xenon-133 (133Xe) were released in large quantities. Cesium attached to particles in the ambient air, approximately according to their av…

Sub-nanosecond nonlinear pulse shaping in microfiber resonators

2009

Thanks to their small size and large index contrast allowing for tight field confinement, optical microfibers are of great interest in nonlinear optics. Their properties have recently been exploited in various devices for supercontinuum generation, pulse compression [1] and third-harmonic generation [2]. Combining field confinement and field enhancement in a loop or knot resonator can result in low-threshold non-linear microfibre devices, in which pulse shaping effects and bistability can be obtained. Such a behaviour has already been observed at a power level of ten milliwatts with millisecond time response, in the case of thermally-induced non-linearity in silica microfibres [3]. In contr…

Titanium Dioxide Waveguides for Data Transmissions at 1.55 µm and 1.98 µm

2017

International audience; We demonstrate error free transmissions of 10 Gbps signals in titanium dioxide waveguides at wavelengths of 1.55 or 2 µm. An efficient coupling of light is achieved thanks to metal grating couplers and we have checked that the component could be used with standard CWDM SFP+ devices.
